3D Side Scroller Game Development Plan

The document outlines a resit project to recreate and improve a previous side-scrolling game called "Rains Fall" by making it 3D and adding new mechanics and features to create a full game about playing a synthetic human destroying the lab that created them. It provides details on the game story, progression from tutorial to boss encounters, and a proposed work pipeline from July to final submission including tasks like character modeling, animation, implementation of movement and mechanics.

Resit Project

Marion Villanueva
My Idea
I planned to recreate and improve a project I
have created back in year 1 into something
better.

The construct project I plan to recreate is

called ‘Rains Fall’ which is a 2D side scroller. I
plan to improve it by making it 3D, however,
I’m keeping it as a side scroller so it wont lose
its elements. I also plan to improve its
mechanics and add in new features to make
it into a full game.
RainFall
• The game ‘RainFall’ is based on a cyberpunk dystopian world where
you play as a synthetic human (half human – half robot) and your goal
is to destroy the lab that’s making humans into synthetic humans.
• The game original didn’t have a lot of mechanics as I was mainly
focused on the aesthetic of the game this time I plan to improve on
that by allowed the player to actually jump instead of making them
jump from different platforms.

Transforming 'Rains Fall' from a 2D to a 3D side scroller can significantly alter gameplay dynamics, impacting player navigation, spatial interactions, and level design complexity. The shift to 3D requires a reconsideration of how space is represented and interacted with, potentially complicating mechanics like jumping and platforming due to added depth perception. Challenges may include ensuring smooth transitions between 2D-style navigation and 3D environmental interactions, maintaining the feel of a side scroller while providing depth exploration, and optimizing performance given increased graphical and computational demands .

Designing a synthetic human character for 'Rains Fall' within a cyberpunk setting involves integrating both human and robotic elements in a cohesive manner. Challenges include achieving a balance between visually distinct technological components and maintaining human relatable features. This duality must also be reflected in character animations and storytelling, requiring advanced visual effects for seamless integration. Technical challenges include ensuring these designs are feasible within the game's engine, particularly for rendering and optimization in a 3D environment while maintaining aesthetic cohesion .

The 'cyberpunk dystopian world' setting of 'Rains Fall' shapes its narrative by providing a thematic backdrop where technology and humanity intersect, influencing story elements such as the protagonist being a synthetic human. This setting contributes to the aesthetic design through a gritty, neon-lit visual style, potentially filled with digital and mechanical motifs that reinforce the themes of a society overwhelmed by technology. It allows for exploration of themes like identity and dehumanization which can be reflected in character designs and environmental storytelling .

Conducting market research on similar games can significantly influence the development strategy of 'Rains Fall' by providing insights into successful mechanics, design trends, and player preferences within the genre. It allows developers to identify gaps in the market that 'Rains Fall' can fill by offering unique features or narratives. Additionally, understanding competitor strengths and weaknesses helps refine the game's unique selling propositions and informs decisions related to art style, game mechanics, pricing model, and target demographics .

Initial level designs in 'Rains Fall', such as the tutorial, are crucial for introducing core mechanics, controls, and the game's world, providing a foundation for player engagement and progression. These levels set pacing and tone, helping players acclimate to the narrative and gameplay style. Enemy encounters in early stages serve to introduce basic combat mechanics and challenge levels, helping to scaffold player skill development as they advance to more complex areas and boss battles .

Tutorials in 'Rains Fall' serve a critical role in enhancing players' initial interactions by introducing them to basic mechanics and controls, thus facilitating acclimatization to the game's environment. They provide essential instructions and contextual learning experiences in a controlled setting, allowing players to adjust to the gameplay without overwhelming them. Effective tutorials can improve player retention and enjoyment by reducing the learning curve and setting a positive tone for the entire game experience .

Proposed improvements for 'Rains Fall' include enhancing mechanics by allowing the player to jump freely, rather than jumping only from different platforms. This change would expand player interactions with the environment, making navigation more fluid and engaging, and offering more control over character movement. Additionally, the introduction of new features and mechanics aims to develop a fuller gameplay experience, challenging players and enriching the interaction with the game's world .

Implementing a realistic timeline and work pipeline in 'Rains Fall' supports successful project management by providing clear milestones and deadlines, which help organize and prioritize tasks among developers. It ensures a structured approach to production phases, from concept development to testing, allowing for effective resource allocation and risk management. By outlining each stage, developers can track progress, identify potential bottlenecks early, and ensure project goals align with the development schedule and available resources .

Transforming 'Rains Fall' into a full game with enhanced features and mechanics involves several impacts and considerations. This expansion necessitates a more comprehensive narrative and detailed world-building to sustain player interest throughout a longer gameplay duration. Developers must consider scalability issues, such as resource demands and performance optimization, to handle increased content without compromising quality. Additionally, enhancing features may require redesigning existing components and ensuring new mechanics seamlessly integrate into the established gameplay, maintaining a cohesive and engaging player experience .

Testing and refining animations and mechanics are crucial for ensuring that 'Rains Fall' delivers a smooth and responsive gameplay experience. By identifying and fixing bugs, developers can prevent breakages that detract from player immersion and enjoyment. Well-polished animations contribute to a more lifelike and engaging world, enhancing the connection between players and their in-game avatars. Refining mechanics also ensures balanced gameplay, where challenges are appropriately scaled to player abilities, maintaining both fairness and excitement .
