Rice
There are more than 40,000 varieties of cultivated rice said to exist. All
of those varieties can be divided into three basic groups, long grain,
short grain and medium grain.
Basmati Rice

A very long, slender grained aromatic rice grown mainly in the

foothills of the Himalayas in India and Pakistan. Sometimes
described as the 'Prince of Rice'. It has a fragrant flavour and
aroma and is the rice used in Indian dishes. The grains are
separate and fluffy when cooked. In Asian recipes it is often
cooked with spices to enhance the grain's aromatic properties.
Brown basmati rice has a higher fibre content and an even
stronger aroma than white basmati.

Varieties & Hybrids

Indian types include basmati 370, basmati 385, and basmati

Ranbirsinghpura ([Link]).
Pakistani varieties are PK 385, D-98 and Super Kernel Basmati
Rice.
Rice Figures
& Numbers
 According to Central Bank of Sudan data, Sudan had imported 81,474 tones of rice in 2018 alone, with
a cost of 41 M USD. Compared to 73,601 tones in 2017.

 Rough data estimation of 200,000 tones rice consumption in Sudan currently that started from 80,000
tones only in 2010 and that's for third grade rice (eri - sticky rice) only.

 Rice production (metric tons) in Sudan was reported at 23,350 in 2010, according to the World Bank
collection of development indicators.
Brief

 Super Kernel Basmati Rice is one of the superior

types of Basmati Rice grownup primarily in the hills
of the Himalayas, mainly the Punjab Province.

 Crown had succeeded to import this variety from

Pakistan, then developed and modified by our
Agricultural Engineers to grow in Sudan.

 In 2010, we started with 400 feddans in Aldewm,

White Nile State in partnership with the state
government.

 The project is a partnership between Crown

Agriculture, White Nile State Ministry of Agriculture
& Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
 The rice produced get processed and packed
in a plant there, as we have our own rice
mill.

 The project aimed to empower the locals

economically through “small scale farming”
module.

 In 2016, the project expanded to 500 more

feddans in South Kosti (Aljabaleen), within
Nifor Project.

 There is also an occasional production in

Crown 15 K feddans farm in Shendi to grow
100 faddans of Kernel Basmati Rice.

 Our total Average Production is 2.3 tonnes

per feddan.
Aroma & Flavor

• Basmati rice has a typical pandan-like (Pandanus amaryllifolius leaf)

flavour caused by the aroma compound 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline.
• Basmati grains contain about 0.09 ppm of this aromatic chemical
compound naturally, a level that is about 12 times more than non-
basmati rice varieties, giving basmati its distinctive spicy fragrance
and flavor.
• According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, basmati rice has
a"medium" glycemic index (between 56 and 69) opposed to jasmine
and "instant" white rice with a glycemic index of 89, thus making it
more suitable for diabetics as compared to certain other grains and
products made from white flour.
