E - LEARNING
Sr. Athulya Jose
Concept and Nature
Intentional use of networked information and
communications technology in teaching and learning.
Other terms: online learning, virtual learning,
distributed learning, network and web-based learning.
Is an educational process – use information and
communication technology – to mediate
asynchronous and synchronous learning and teaching
activities.
Definition
E-learning – electronic learning
Using a computer to deliver part – or all of a course whether it’s in a school
– or a full distance learning course.
Also known as – distributed learning, distance learning, technology enabled
learning, and online learning
Goals of E-Learning
Designed to guide students through information/ - to help them to perform in
specific tasks.
Information based e-learning content – information to students – no specific skill
to be learned.
Performance based content – lessons build off of a procedural skill – student is
expected to increase proficiency.
Advantages or Benefits of E-Learning
1. Lower cost – reduces expenses of face to face training
2. Time is saved
3. Flexibility
4. Faster response
5. Greater effectiveness
6. Better morale – through live virtual classrooms, chats and collaborative
exercises, e-learning helps organisations to keep morale and efficiency.
7. Greater Competitiveness
8. Ability to provide instruction in real time
9. Ability to give training to large numbers of people simultaneously.
10. Reducing environments impact – travel – reduce – carbon – trees
11. Quality education, made affordable
Different Types of E-Learning
1. Synchronous E-Learning
2. Asynchronous E-Learning
1. Synchronous
Meaning – at the same time
Interaction between – participant and instructor – via web – in the real time
VCR – Virtual Class Rooms = real classrooms online
Interaction – participants – instructor – through messaging, chat, audio and video
conferencing.
Benefits:
1. Ability to log/track learning activities
2. Continuous monitoring and correction is possible
3. Possibilities of global connectivity and collaboration opportunities among learners
4. Ability to personalise the training for each learner.
2. Asynchronous
Meaning – not at the same time
WBT – Web Based Training – without the live interaction of the instructor – their
own pace
When the participant needs information – get it.
CBTs – modules on CD-Rom’s, WBTs – or through well written articles, other write
ups.
Advantages:
1. Availability ‘just in time’ for instant learning
2. Flexibility of access from anywhere at any time
3. Ability to simultaneously reach an unlimited number of em.
