The convenience store model was born in 1927 at the Southland Ice Company in Dallas,
Texas. An entrepreneurial ice dock employee, who's in charge of selling blocks of ice to
refrigerate food, started offering customers milk, bread, and eggs on Sundays and evenings, when
grocery stores were closed. Since shoppers "toted" their orders, the Company's first stores were
called Tote'm stores. Few retailers also had authentic Alaskan totem poles displayed in front of
them. Tote'm was renamed 7-Eleven in 1946 to reflect the stores' new, extended hours – 7 a.m. to
11 p.m., seven days a week.

7-Eleven is the worlds largest convenience store, with nearly six new locations opening
every day. Its first store opened on February 29, 1984, at the intersection of Kamias Road and
Edsa Avenue in Quezon City. The firm was founded in 1927 under the name The Southland
Corporation (of Dallas, Texas). It was eventually renamed 7-Eleven Inc. In the Philippines, 7-
Eleven has 2,287 stores (as of December 2017).
