PV Panel Cooling with Nanofluids Analysis

This document outlines a proposed study to investigate experimentally the effect of cooling on photovoltaic (PV) panel performance using different nanofluids and cooling methods. The study aims to compare the effects of calcium carbonate, ferro magnetite nanofluids, water, and natural air on PV panel power output and efficiency under varying radiation intensities outdoors. A literature review found that nanofluids can provide improved thermal conductivity over conventional fluids for cooling. The proposed methodology includes testing rig design, experimentation comparing the different cooling methods, analysis of experimental data, and recommendations. A future project is outlined to apply the different cooling methods to PV panels and measure temperature changes to determine the most effective cooling method.

Objectiv
e
• to investigate experimentally the effect of cooling on performance of PV
panels in terms of power and efficiency by using different types of
nanofluids such as Calcium Carbonate(CaCO3), and Ferro magnetite
(Fe3O4) and water and natural air as a cooling medium, in outdoors ,
under different radiation intensity

Introduction

• Nanofluids are dilute liquid suspensions of nanoparticles with

at least one of their principal dimensions smaller than 100 nm

• Nanofluids are formed by suspending nano-sized particle with

base fluid
• The high surface area of nanoparticles enhances the heat
conduction of nanofluids since heat transfer occurs on the
surface of the particle

• One of the main problems that limits the extensive use of PV
systems is the rising in temperature of PV panels in hot
climates. Overheating of a PV module decreases performance
of output power by 0.4-0.5% per 1°C over its rated
temperature ( 25 °C).

• Jordan is one of the countries located in the global solar
belt, so it has enormous solar energy potential

• Solar energy, like other forms of alternative energy, remains

underutilized in Jordan. Decentralized photovoltaic units in rural
and remote villages are currently used for lighting, water
pumping and other social services (1000KW of peak capacity)

• The average solar radiation ranging between 5 and 7 KWh/m2,

which implies a potential of at least 1000 GWh per year
annually.

06/03/2021 7
• One of the most important problems is the heat
transfer that must be improved to ensure the
maximum benefit and the highest performance of the
solar panels

• nanofluids They are expected to give better

thermal performance than conventional fluids due
to the presence of suspended nanoparticles

06/03/2021 8
Literature Review
• 30 published papers related to nanofluid
cooling where studied by us and we found the
following :

•Experimental work related to PV panels cooling using nanofluids

and various methods.

•Papers related to the use of nanoscale fluids in different solar

panel systems such as (PV and PV/T)
06/03/2021 9
•The importance of heat transfer on the performance and
efficiency of solar panels

•The important of using nanofluids for cooling such as Al2O3,

Fe2O3 ,CuO , SIC and ZnO

• The nanomaterials that offer significant advantages of superior

thermophysical properties such as (thermal conductivity,
viscosity, stability)

06/03/2021 10
Justification of the work
Based on previous studies, the use of different cooling
mediums altogether To investigated any cooling medium that
gives the best efficiency and higher heat transfer And the
comparison between them , such as in our work CaCo3,
Fe3O4, water, and natural air cooling was score so this
motivated our work
