OSHA Guidelines for Foot Protection

The document discusses requirements and standards for protective footwear. Protective footwear should be worn in situations involving corrosive, electrical or heavy falling hazards. Standards specify footwear should protect against impacts of at least 200J and compressions of at least 15KN. Construction requires toe caps and metatarsal guards that are securely attached and don't impair movement. Footwear must meet various impact, cut and chemical resistance standards.

Foot protection:

According to OSHA standard, The employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses protective footwear
when working in areas where there is a danger of foot injuries due to falling or rolling objects, or objects
piercing the sole, or when the use of protective footwear will protect the affected employee from an electrical
hazard, such as a static-discharge or electric-shock hazard, that remains after the employer takes other necessary
protective measures.
OSHA suggests protective footwear be worn in situations involving the following:
• Corrosive or poisonous materials
• Electrical hazards
• Static electricity that could cause an explosion
• Heavy objects that could roll onto feet
• Sharp objects that could puncture the foot
• Molten metal that could splash onto feet
• Hot or slippery surfaces
• Hazardous chemicals
Necessary Markings:

Standards: ISO20345:2011 / IS 15298-2 : 2016

Safety Foot wear:
Incorporated with protective feature to protect the wearer from injuries which could arise through accidents,
fitted with toe caps, designed to give protection against impact when tested at an energy level of at least 200J
and against compression when tested at an compression load of at least 15KN.

Construction:
The metatarsal protective device shall be made from suitable materials and be of suitable shape, such that under
impact the resulting force are distributed over the sole, the toecap, and large as surface of the foot as possible.
The metatarsal protective device shall be attached to the footwear in such a manner that it cannot be removed
without damaging the footwear.
It should fit the shape of the footwear at the inner and outer side of the foot and shall be designed so as not to
impair normal foot movement.
Basic requirement of safety foot wear:
• Impact resistance
• Compression resistance
• Tear strength
• Tensile properties
• Flexing properties
• Water vapor permeability and coefficient
• PH Value
• Hydrolysis test
• Chromium VI content
• Abrasion resistant
• Behavior of toecap
• Cut resistance
• Electrical properties
• Water, oil, acid, chemical and solvent resistance.
• Ankle protection and anti slip sole.
Electrical properties:

Conductive footwear:
Electrically conductive footwear to be used if it is necessary to minimize electrostatic charges in the shortest
possible time, e.g. when handling explosives. It order to ensure that the footwear is conductive, it has been
specified to have an upper limit of resistance of 100kΩ in its new state.

Antistatic footwear:
Antistatic footwear should be used if it is necessary to minimize electrostatic build up by dissipating
electrostatic charges, thus avoiding the risk of spark ignition, e.g. flammable substance and vapors, and if the
risk of electric shock from any electrical apparatus or live parts has not been completely eliminated.

The discharge path through a product should normally have an electrical resistance of less than 1000 MΩ at
anytime through its useful life.
