First vs Second Generation Computers

The document discusses the first and second generations of computers. The first generation used vacuum tubes as circuitry elements and magnetic drums for memory. They were not portable, reliable, or efficient. The second generation used transistors instead of vacuum tubes, making computers smaller, cheaper, faster, and more reliable. However, second generation computers still required maintenance and punched cards for input.

FIRST GENERATION COMPUTER

These Computers are developed by using

vacuum tube. (1940-1956)
• Vacuum tube were used as circuitry element
• Magnet Drums were used for memory
• Took more room
FIRST
GENERATION
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

1. The computer was very fast 1. The first generation of computer is

to calculate. not portable.
2. The vacuum tube technology
2. It is not reliable devices.
made possible the advent of
electronic computers. 3. An air-conditioned is required..
3. Those days this was the only
electronic.
SECOND GENERATION (1956–1963)

1. T r a n s i s t o r s w e r e u s e d i n t h e s e c o n d
generation of the computer and
transistors replaced the vacuum tubes.
2. T r a n s i s t o r s a r e s u p e r i o r t o t h e v a c u u m
tube because due to the transistors

cards and paper tapes and outputs were
displayed on the printouts which were
the same as the first generation of
c o m p u t e r.
SECOND GENERATION (1956–1963)
• More reliable than the
first generation.
• Good speed and can
calculate the data in the
microseconds.
• Also used assembly
languages.
ADVANTAGE • Smaller in the size as
compared to the first
generation.
• Uses less amount of
e n e r g y.
• Portable
• Accuracy is improved than
i t s p r e d e c e s s o r.
• Constant maintenance is
re q u i re d t o w o r k p ro p e r l y.
• Commercial production
was very difficult.
• Still punched cards were
used for input.
DISADVANTAGE • The cooling system is
required.
• More expensive and non-
versatile.
• Used for specific
purposes.
