Computers and Network Technology Overview

This document provides an overview of computers and network technology. It discusses different types of computers including desktops, servers, laptops, tablets, smartphones and their key features. It also covers different types of computer users such as casual users, SOHO users, and power users. Additionally, it describes different types of computer networks including wired and wireless networks and components that make up a computer network such as nodes, networking hardware, and software. The document emphasizes how convergence has combined separate technologies into single devices like smartphones.

Why we use Computer?
Efficiency Accuracy Reliability
Computer can save:

• Time • Quality Program • Computer can

• Labor and Quality of be relied on to
• Resources Data >>> 100 % do tasks without
accuracy… tiring,
complaining and
asking for more
• The efficiency, accuracy and reliability of computers
combined with the ability to communicate, enable
use to
• eliminate time and distance as constraints
• communicate and share information globally
• Save on communication costs
• Interact socially on a bigger scale
Types of Computer
When comparing computers you
should look at:

• Power – the specs

• Purpose – e.g. servers
• Size – power, purpose vs. portability
• Software – operating systems or ‘platforms’
Non-portable computers

• generally consist of a system unit, monitor, mouse

and keyboard
• large
• not meant to be moved
Non-portable computers
Entry-level machines
Desktop Cheapest to purchase Low
hardware specs ‘Home
editions’ software

Server Types Workstation

Portable Computers
• an ‘all-in-one’ design.
• designed to fold to take up less space, to be easy to
carry and to protect the delicate parts of the
computer.
• Have outsold desktops in the last few years.
Portable Computers- Types
Laptop
• Screen size larger than 12" or 13"
Notebook • Tablet PC: reversible screen, touch/pen
Tablet sensitive Laptop
PC
• Designed to be ultra slim and light
Ultrabook • Do not include optical drives and hard
drives, use SSDs
• Do not include optical drives
Netbook • Have very low powered CPU
• popular as lightweight computer Netbook
Mobile Computer Devices
• It designed to maximize battery life and to
be ‘always on’.
• It use operating systems designed to use
less power (iOS, Android, Windows
Mobile, Windows 8 RT)  often use touch
screen interfaces
Smartphones

Consumer Tablet
Categories of users
Casual or personal user

• limited office tasks

• Internet banking
• e-mail and browsing the Web
• social networking
• Skyping
• viewing and sharing photos
• entertainment: casual gaming,
playing music and watching movies
SOHO (Small Office Home Office) user
• Category dependent on type of business
• Needs entry-level desktops for admin:
◦accounting or billing
◦ databases with clients, suppliers,
stock, etc.
◦ electronic document archiving
◦ planning and scheduling, etc.
• Might also need other computer
depending on type of business
Power users

• Top of the range

- hardware & software
- hardcore gamers
- architects
- Engineers
- video editing profession
- scientists
Mobile users

• Not necessarily a separate category. Every

category of user also use mobile technology.
• Smartphones or tablets for tasks such as
◦ browsing and e-mail
◦ playing games
◦ reading books
◦ navigating with GPS
◦ taking quick notes
◦ taking photos and video and recording
sound
Convergence

• Convergence the trend

where:
• separate technologies and
functions that required different
devices in the past are combined
into one single device
Convergence – the smartphone and
the consumer tablet

Computer Network
Computer Network

• A collection of computing devices that are connected

in various ways in order to communicate and share
resources. Usually, the connections between
computers in a network are made using physical wires
or cables.
• A computer network often simply referred to as a
network, is a collection of hardware components,
which are interconnected by communication channels
that allow sharing of resources and information with
respect to certain set of rules/protocols via
OS/software.
Networking Components

• Every network includes these three components:

• The computers that are connected together. Computers and
similar devices are called nodes when connected to a network.
• The networking hardware that connects the computers together,
including hardware installed in your computer, network cables,
and devices that connect all the cables together.
• Networking software that runs on each computer and enables it
to communicate with other computers on the network.
