Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing Techniques

This document describes and compares several manufacturing techniques including paper-based prototyping, laminated object manufacturing, stereolithography, laser cutting, lathe turning, injection molding, casting, knitting, and weaving. It provides advantages and disadvantages of each technique as well as noting whether they are used for one-off or mass production. Videos are also linked to further explain each technique.

Paper Based Rapid
Prototyping
This technique is an additive technique that
involves putting layers of paper, wax or plastic to
form a solid object. An advantage to it is
the paper prototype allows quickly visualize and
test various ideas. It can help a team visualize a
variety of ideas. A disadvantage of this would be
that there is a lack of accuracy in the paper
prototype. It would of course use one off
production as it is a prototype.

LOM and Stereolithography
Laminated object manufacturing Stereolithography
Takes sliced CAD data and prints it, This uses a vat of photosensitive resin and a
layer by layer to form an object. A vertically moving platform. It uses a laser to print
the pattern of what it is trying to make. The
disadvantage is that it takes time, but it platform then moves down to mould the object.
is accurate to the CAD model. It would Uses liquid polymer and like the other additive
use one off production as it requires a techniques it is one off production. It is
specialist model. (CAD). It uses plastic. expensive and time consuming, but it is accurate.

These techniques are known as
subtractive techniques, where you
Laser Cutting, Sawing, Drilling and Chiseling, start with a bigger object and cut
Routing, Milling, Abraiding it down to what you would like it
to be. This can of course be done
in several ways, like cutting, laser
cutting, cutting by a saw, drilling
into something, etc. An advantage
to this is that many materials can
be processed. However, there is a
lot of material that is being
wasted. The materials used can be
solid blocks, bars, rods of plastic,
or metal. This technique would
use one off since they are high
quality products but can be mass
produced with machines.

Lathe Turning
Turning is a machining process used to make cylindrical
parts. In this process the cutting tool moves in a linearly
while the object being used rotates, it is like pottery. It is
usually used with metals. An advantage is that it has a
smooth surface finish, as well as requiring less energy. On
the other hand, it has limited rotational parts and needs
specific tools. This type of subtractive technique would
use mass/flow production with the use of machines.

Injection Moulding

Injection molding is a method to

obtain molded products by injecting plastic
materials molten by heat into a mold. An
advantage is that it is fast and does not
require much labor, and a disadvantage to
this technique is that up front costs are high
due to the design, testing, and tooling
required. This technique uses thermoplastics.
This technique can be flow produced since
they are machines that do not require much
labor.

Casting (Sand and
Dye)

Sand casting, is a metal casting process

characterized by using sand as the mold
material. The sand acts as a mold to the metal.
It is not very accurate and can take time
depending on the liquids drying properties. The
materials used are usually metals or plastics.
The production it uses is one off since it is an
intricate technique.

Knitting and Weaving

Knitting or weaving is a method by which

yarn is manipulated to create a textile or
fabric. It is a slow process and the
material that it uses is yarn or cotton. It is
one off as a scale of production however
if done with machines it can be mass
produced.
