SCADA Tools for Power System Control

The document discusses recent tools for controlling power systems through generation, transmission, and distribution. It describes SCADA systems for supervising control and data acquisition across generation, transmission, and distribution networks. It also introduces flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and HVDC systems, and how they can control various power system parameters like voltage, impedance, and angle to provide benefits like increased power transfer capability and system stability. The document outlines various power system constraints and discusses control of different parts of the power system to provide benefits like improved system security and flexibility. INTRODUCTION FACTS
The term ”FACTS” (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) covers several power
electronics based systems used for AC power transmission and distribution. Given
the nature of power electronics equipment, FACTS solutions will be particularly
justifiable in applications requiring one or more of the following qualities:
-Rapid dynamic response
-Ability for frequent variations in output
-Smoothly adjustable output.
FACTS are a family of devices which can be inserted into power grids in series, in
shunt, and in some cases, both in shunt and series. Important applications in
power transmission and distribution involve devices such as SVC (Static Var
Compensators), Fixed Series Capacitors (SC) as well as Thyristor-Controlled Series
Capacitors (TCSC) and STATCOM.
HOW TO FACT CONTROLLERS BENEFIT AC TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS
SVC and SC have been utilized for a long time. The first SC installations came on line in the
early [Link] the pioneering countries are USA and Sweden. SVCs have been
available for commercial purposes since the 1970s. Over the years, more than a thousand
SVCs and SCs have been installed all over the world. FACTS mainly find applications in the
following areas:
• Power transmission
• Power quality
• Railway grid connection
• Wind power grid connection
• Cable systems With FACTS, the following benefits can be attained in AC systems:
• Improved power transmission capability
• Improved system stability and availability
• Improved power quality
• Minimized environmental impact
• Minimized transmission losses
CONTROL OF POWER SYSTEMS
When discussing the creation, movement, and utilization of electrical power, it can be
separated into three areas, which traditionally determined the way in which electric
utility companies had been organized.
These are illustrated are:
• Generation • Transmission • Distribution

Although power electronic based equipment is prevalent in each of these three areas,
such as with static excitation systems for generators and Custom Power equipment in
distribution systems
• Steady-State Power Transfer Limit

• Voltage Stability Limit

• Dynamic Voltage Limit

• Transient Stability Limit

• Power System Oscillation Damping Limit

• Inadvertent Loop Flow Limit

• Thermal Limit

• Short-Circuit Current Limit

• Others
Controllability of Power Systems

• Voltage
• Angle
• Impedance

Examples of Conventional Equipment For Enhancing Power System Control

• Series Capacitor-Controls impedance
• Switched Shunt-Capacitor and Reactor-Controls voltage
• Transformer LTC-Controls voltage
• Phase Shifting Transformer-Controls angle
• Synchronous Condenser-Controls voltage
• Special Stability Controls-Typically focuses on
voltage control but can often include direct control of
power
• Others (When Thermal Limits are Involved)-Can
included reconductoring, raising conductors,
dynamic line monitoring, adding new lines, etc.
Example of FACTS Controllers for Enhancing Power System Control

• Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM)-Controls voltage

• Static Var Compensator (SVC)-Controls voltage

• Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC)

• Convertible Series Compensator (CSC)

• Inter-phase Power Flow Controller (IPFC)

• Static Synchronous Series Controller (SSSC)-Each of the aforementioned (and

similar) controllers impact voltage, impedance, and/or angle (and power)

• Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC)-Controls impedance

• Thyristor Controlled Phase Shifting Transformer(TCPST)-Controls angle

• Super Conducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES)-Controls voltage and power

Benefits of Control of Power Systems
• Increased Loading and More Effective Use of
Transmission Corridors
• Added Power Flow Control
• Improved Power System Stability
• Increased System Security
• Increased System Reliability
• Added Flexibility in Setting New Generation
• Elimination or Deferral of the Need for New
Transmission Lines
FUTURE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT
The recent power applications like HVDC and FACTS are
very much depend upon the conversion and inversion
mechanism. All the system processes made as closed loop control
systems for requirement of qualitative and quantitative
improvement now a days SCADA is one powerful mechanism
through which control of process at far distances from the
centralized control room is made possible. With this systems the
data collection and control efficiency is increased with more and
more accuracy by the use of the latest technology devices for
monitoring and metering. Now a days power transmission of
both D.C and A.C in the same transmission line .so I want
research how to possible to transmit A.C and D.C power in
single transmission line.
