Penggunaan Negative Emphasis– Kata keterangan


selanjutnya merupakan jenis kata keterangan yang
umumnya menjawab pertanyaan berapa sering (how
often). Kata keterangan ini dikenal degan negative
emphasis karena berupa frase seperti not one, not
once, not until, never, hardly, never again, only
rarely, dan very seldom.
Usually, we put the expression at the beginning of the
sentence to emphasise what we're saying. It makes our
sentence sound surprising or striking or unusual. It
also sounds quite formal. If you don't want to give this
impression, you can put the negative expression later
in the sentence in the normal way:
Seldom have I seen such beautiful work.
('Seldom' is at the beginning, so we use inversion. This
sentence emphasizes what beautiful work it is.)
I have seldom seen such beautiful work.
('Seldom' is in the normal place, so we don't use
inversion. This is a normal sentence with no special
emphasis.)

Here are some negative adverbs and adverb phrases that we often use with
inversion:
1.I had hardly got into bed when the telephone rang. (Hardly...)
Hardly had I got into bed when the telephone rang.
2. She had never seen such a beautiful sight before. (Never....)
Never had she seen such a beautiful sight before.
3. We seldom see such an amazing display of dance. (Seldom...)
Seldom do we see such an amazing display of dance.
4. You will rarely hear such beautiful music. (Rarely...)
Rarely will you hear such beautiful music.
Contoh kalimat dengan negative emphasis:
Incorrect: Never has I seen you before.
Correct   : Never have I seen you before.
Incorrect: Never she has gone so long time like this.
Correct   : Never has she gone so long time like this.
Incorrect: Very seldom a performance can hold their
attention like this one.
Correct   : Very seldom can a performance hold their
attention like this one.
Incorrect: Never again I will meet him anymore.
Correct   : Never again will I meet him anymore.
