ACADEMIC WRITING

PRINCIPLES AND FEATURES

FORMALITY

Prepared by: Rayhana Navarro Loyola

Venice Kate Pacete
Academic writing is relatively
formal. In general, this means that
in an essay you should avoid
colloquial words and expressions.
In general it means in an essay that
you should avoid the following:

colloquial words and expressions;

"stuff", "a lot of", "thing", "sort of”,
“bamboozle”, “go nuts”.
Examples of Colloquialism from
Common Speech
1. WORDS- One famous colloquial difference in the
United States is the way a person refers to a
carbonated beverage.

Example:
“coke” used as a generic term and not just to refer
to the brand.
Examples of Colloquialism from
Common Speech
CONTRACTIONS- Words such as
“aren’t”, “isn’t” and so on are
examples of colloquialism, as they
are not used widely throughout
English speaking populations.
Example: (excerpt from Mark Twain’s
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn)

“I didn’t want to go back no more. I had

stopped cussing, because the widow didn’t
like it; but now I took to it again because pap
hadn’t no objections… but by –and –by pap
got too handy with his hick’ry, and I couldn’t
stand it.”
Examples of Colloquialism from
Common Speech
PROFANITY- Some words are considered profane in
some dialects of English where they are not at all
bad in other dialects.

Example:
The word “bloody” which is a simple adjective in
American English but is a curse word in british
English.
Example: (excerpt from Burro Genius by
Victor Villasenor)

“Hell, I’ve forgotten more than you or most

people will EVER UNDERSTAND!”
b. abbreviated forms: "can't",
"doesn't", "shouldn't“.
c. two word verbs: "put off", "bring
up"
d. sub-headings, numbering and
bullet-points in formal essays - but
use them in reports.
