Michael Jordan’s Childhood
● Jordan was born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York.
● Grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina.
● Jordan had a very competitive edge ever since he was a child
● Jordan grew up with a stable family life
● Lived with his mother Delores, his father James, and his four siblings:
Larry, Deloris, Roslyn and James Jr.
● James introduced Jordan to baseball first which was his first love and
they built a basketball court in their backyard
● He then fell in love with basketball and wanted to be just like his
brother Larry
Basketball Before the NBA
● Laney High School
○ As a sophomore, he tried out for the varsity basketball but he didn’t make it because he was
raw and too small
○ He grew 4 inches the summer before junior year and practiced day in and day out
○ He averaged around 25 points a game his junior year with multiple 40 point games
○ He averaged 29.2 points, 11.6 rebounds and 10.1 assists during his senior year and was
selected to the McDonald’s All American Team in which he scored 30 points that game, won
the game, and was the MVP of the game
○ He accepted University of North Carolina’s scholarship to play for the Tar Heels
● University of North Carolina
○ As a Tar Heel, he played 101 games and averaged 17.7 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists
○ He led the Tar Heels to an NCAA Championship with a game winning shot
○ He won a ridiculous amount of awards during his college run
