Overview of Bluetooth Technology

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard that allows for short-range communications between various digital devices such as mobile phones, headphones, laptops and printers. It was originally developed in the 1990s as a cable replacement technology. Bluetooth works by forming short-range personal area networks and uses frequency hopping to avoid interference between other devices. Common applications today include wireless keyboards, headphones, file transfers between devices and GPS receivers. Future applications may include uses in smart homes, retail, medical devices, and automotive technologies.

What is BLUETOOTH?

Bluetooth is standard for

wireless communications b/w
devices in a PAN using RF for
a short range.
Why Bluetooth?

 It’s wireless.

 It’s simple.

 It’s inexpensive.
 Low power.

 Robustness.

 Provision for both voice & data.

Bluetooth Was Originally a Cable-
Replacement Technology
Development
History
 Project started in 1995 by
Swedish telecommunications
manufacturer LM Ericsson.

 In 1998 major telecom

companies formed Bluetooth
SIG to develop its applications.

 2000+ members in SIG.

Development centers
 Global headquarters in Bellevue,
Washington, USA.

 Major promoters companies

include Ericsson, Intel, Microsoft,
IBM, Motorola, Nokia and Toshiba.
Working of Bluetooth
Auto conversation between
Bluetooth enabled devices.

Formation of personal area

network (PAN) or piconet.

Spread-spectrum frequency
hopping.
Working (Cont…)

o Inquire .

o Establish a link using

Link Manager protocol.

o Discover services using

SDP.
Working (Cont…)

 Create a channel.

 Authenticate.

 Send and receive data.

Typical Bluetooth Networks
Technology Used

 Radio Frequency at 2.45 GHz.

 Very low signal power ( ~1mw ).

 Operation range around 10m.

 Omni directional signals and can pass

through walls and briefcases.
Avoiding Interference
 Many applications and devices work
independently in same area without
interference.

 Frequency Hopping

 Software for correcting small errors.

 Pseudo-Random frequency

hopping.

 Authentication.

 Encryption.
Present Applications

 Wireless keyboards, mouse,

USB, Adapter, Modems, Pc cards.

 File transfer.

 Headsets, Music players.

Present Applications(Cont..)

 GPS receiver.

 Data Sharing .

 Gaming.
Future Applications

• Home networking for convenient,

safe and secure house.

• Retail and Mobile e-Commerce.

• Travel
Future Applications(Cont..)

• Medical
– remote patient monitoring,
wireless biometric data.
• Automotive Industry
– activating garage doors, and
home lighting and heating
systems.
• Bluetooth Messaging.
Conclusion
 Bluetooth refers not only to a

technology but also to a

standard and a specification.

 The main reason why the

Bluetooth is not spreading so

rapidly is the adapters.
