Sports Coaching
Observation Analysis
• This should be used to identify athletes needs.
• The coach should compete full analysis of their overall performance
• From this a training programme should be created to improve areas that lack
required level of skill but still work on areas that are sufficient just to keep
them in tune.
• Most common method is Notational Analysis.
• This requires the coach to record number of skills completed effectively in a
competitive situation.
Some coaches that would use this:-
• José Mourinho
• Warren Gatland
• The coach must not be bias when conducting this or the results are void and
not valid.
• This is extremely effective technique because it has clear guideline and does
not have many downsides.
Effective Demonstration
• A coach has three options, show the skill or movement themselves, use video or
pictures or use a machine to guide them though the movement.
When showing the skill the coach should:-
• Determine purpose and type of demonstration.
• Ensure the athletes get what is happening.
• Ensure all athletes can see the demonstration.
• One or two coaching tips at a time.
• Repeat Demonstration more than once.
• Invite questions.
• This is an effective way of teaching a skill because the athletes can relate to the
skill if the coach demonstrates it effectively.
• A shy athlete might not say if they did not see or understand the demonstration
and still perform the move with errors.
Goal-Setting
This can be split into 3.
•Short Term Goals- from one day to one month and are meant to be easily
reachable and not take too long.
•Medium Term Goals- These are specific points in the athletes season like
Christmas, Easter etc. like return from injury.
•Long Term Goals- Usually measured in years. Like winning the league.
•This can be an effective way but can also be very vague and it is needed to
be clear goals.
•Every coach would set goals like:-
•Roy Hodgson
•Brendan Rodgers
