ROURKELA STEEL PLANT

 Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), the first integrated steel

plant in the public sector in India
 Was set up with German collaboration with an installed
capacity of 1 million tonnes.
 RSP was the first plant in India to incorporate LD
technology of steel making.
 currently has the capacity to produce 1.9 MT of steel
PLANT PRODUCTS
 Plate Mill Plates
 HR Plates
 HR Coils
 ERW Pipes
 SW Pipes
 Sheets & Coils
 Galvanized Sheets
 Electrolytic Tin-Plates
 Silicon Steel Sheets
 Total Saleable Steel
COMMUNICATION IN PLANT
 Telephone

 Public address system

 Mobile

 Loud Speaker
 Push to talk (PTT)

 Base communication
VHF RADIO COMMUNICATION
 Radio frequency range - 30 MHz to 300 MHz.
 Ideal for short-distance terrestrial communication
 The VHF devices used by the plant were PTT and
BASE COMMUNICATION
 VHF is also less affected by atmospheric noise and
interference
PUSH TO TALK(WALKY –TALKY)
 MOTOROLA GP338----  MOTOROLA GP328----
With 128 channels With 16 channel
 advanced model
PUSH TO TALK(WALKY –TALKY)
 PTTs are easily programmable
 Plant has to pay a yearly subscription fee to the
Government of India
 range around 3-4 Km
 PROFFESIONAL RADIO CPS (customer
programming software) which is provided by the
company MOTOROLA itself.
 Devices can also be cloned.

PROFFESIONAL RADIO CPS
PTT MODES
 CSQ or Carrier Squelch is communications with no
codes. Codes help filter out unwanted transmissions. Its
open to all
 TPL or Tone Private Line modulates at a low frequency.
 DPL or Digital Private Line modulates a series of
binary codes.
 Both users must be on the same TPL or DPL to
communicate
 Advantage of TPL is that DPL takes too long to decode
BASE STATION
 Is one end of a communications link

 The other end is a movable vehicle-mounted radio or walkie-talkie

 upto 255 channels.

 12 volts power supply.

 range -- 100 to 200 km- so need

antenna at height

 mouthpiece -- programmable port

LOUD SPEAKER
 very common method of communication
 short distance communication -- address a congregation
of employees
 Its general purpose is to amplify the sound of user
 It cannot reproduce sound <200hz.
 consists of a line matching transformer
PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM
 Traditionally used for staff announcements and
background music, safety warnings from fire and
bomb alerts
 The plant PA system handle upto 80 stations .
The stations are set by the telephone exchange
 the most fastest way of communicating
PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM
TELEPHONE EXCHANGE
 The plant maintained two exchanges
 The one in the plant provided the intercom and
public address services along with the connection
with the town exchange with the help of junction
cable.
 The township exchange was present in the town
and from there the lines were distributed
throughout the town .
EXCHANGE LAYOUT
EXCHANGE
 power supply -- 3 phase . Emergency supply also available but variation is high .A step
down transformer is used to step down the voltage required to acceptable level
 The battery room provides a back up in case of power failure . Supply voltage is 48v .
There are two sets of battery sets in the exchange one is connected and second charging
 The technology used here in the exchange is pulse code modulation and time division
modulation . Prior to this the technology used was [Link]
 Cards used in exchange are TONE SENDING card and TIME SWITCH card
 The tone sending card is responsible for the dial tone
 A card can hold upto 8 numbers of users. When a person calls, the light for that no on the
card flashes in the exchange.
 The distribution unit consists of many relays and wires mounted on a rack which is
grounded to make it lightening proof. From here the wires are sent to the users to their
home. When person wants to have his no changed this is done by relocating the wires
here.
CARDS
 OPERATOR CARD- interface analog suscriber line with digital switch.
 TRUNK CARD- same as OC but interfaces with analog trunk lines
 ANNOUNCEMENT CARD- tones stored
 PROCEDURE CARD- digital switch ,connects two users, TDM
 SIGNAL CARD- receive /send info to/from terminal cards in multiplexed
fashion
 CONFERENCE CARD- party conference
 POWER SUPPLY CARD- energy source for cards
CABINET
C BOT
DISTRIBUTION UNIT
 The distribution unit consists of many relays and wires mounted on a rack
which is grounded to make it lightening proof. From here the wires are sent to
the users to their home. When person wants to have his no changed this is done
by relocating the wires here.
OUTDOOR EQUIPMENTS
 Underground jelly filled cable
 Junction box
 Junction Cable- between two Exchange
 Relay unit
 Telephone instruments—Krone tool , Cable Fault
Locator , Cable joining Kit
JELLY FILLED CABLE
 1 .Better insulation resistance value
 2 . low capacitance
 [Link] capacitive coupling
 4 .Reduced maintenance cost
 [Link] safety against corrosion
JOINING TWO CABLES
 Preparation-mark on both ends,remove jacket
steel tape armor ,polyAl sheets

 Conductor joining-twist 2 rounds, cut extra

conductors.
 Sealing-make bag of polyethylene sheet over
joint, pour jelly , wrap with pvc. Wrap
armour wire then solder it
 Cleaning- wrap aluminium tape around sheet.
smooth ---else it cracks
RAILWAY SIGNALLING
POINT MACHINE--- is used to change tracks .The one in the plant is supplied
by Siemens
POINT MACHINE
WORKING
 Operator operates from control room ,the induction motor gets supply through
different relays .It operates in one direction and is stopped by limit switch
.When machine works perfectly the operator gets steady indication light on the
Control board and the train moves. If any trouble i.e. the operator gets a
flashing light and a person is immediately send to get it repaired.
 If there remains a gap between the tongue rail and the fixed rail then there is a
fault with the machine.
 The safety switch when turned on cuts off supply in the 2 out of three phases of
motor’s supply.
CONTROL ROOM
 to control the changing of the tracks
 Tracks are selected by pressing the buttons on the to be selected
lines
 light indicator shows the lines status whether active or not and if it
flashes there is some error in the line

RELAY
RELAY ROOM
ROOM

 Contains the complex circuitry

 Relays arranged to form relay logic
 Each box has 3 relays
