Project Design and Research Methodology

This document outlines the key steps in designing a research project: 1) Identifying research questions and populations; 2) Considering appropriate settings and sites for data collection; 3) Determining sampling strategies like random, stratified, or purposive sampling; 4) Planning data collection, organization, storage and analysis; 5) Disseminating findings through reports, presentations or publications. The overall process involves imagining how to undertake the study, selecting sites and subjects, collecting and analyzing data, and sharing results.

Designing Projects

IT IS A MATTER OF THINKING ABOUT, IMAGINING, AND VISUALIZING

HOW THE RESEARCH STUDY WILL BE UNDERTAKEN.
Research idea/questions

 What , Where, How, When, Who

Setting and Population Appropriateness

The investigator needs to consider a rationale for identifying and using a particular
setting as a data collection site.
The study site/setting should be a location
where:
 Entry/access is possible
 The appropriate people(target population) are available
Sampling Strategies

The logic of using a sample of subject is to make inferences about some larger
population from a smaller one—the sample.

In quantitative research, the investigator is keenly concerned with probability

sampling.
Probability Sampling Strategies

 Simple Random sampling

 Systematic Random sampling
 Stratified Random sampling
Nonprobability Samples

 Convenience Sampling
 Purposive Sampling
 Snowball Sampling
 Quota Sampling
Data Collection and Organization

 Audiotape cassettes
 Spiral notebooks
 Photographs or video recording
Data Storage, retrieval, and Analysis
Data analysis three concurrent flows of
actions:
 Data reduction
 Data Display
 Conclusions and verifications
Dissemination
-submitted to appropriate public agencies or to funding sources.
-formal presentations at professional association meetings.

*This stage of process is integral to the whole.
