Workplace Safety Signs Overview

There are three categories of safety signs used in workplaces: regulatory signs, warning signs, and information signs. Regulatory signs are either circular and indicate prohibitions with red and black or mandatory actions with white and black. Warning signs are triangular and indicate either caution in yellow and black or danger in white and red. Safety Signs Categories

There are three basic sign categories used in the


workplace:

• Regulatory

• Warning

• Information
1. Regulatory
 
A circle indicates that an order is in force

Prohibition Mandatory
• forbids an action • Requires an action
• Red and Black on white • White on Black
2. Warning
 
A triangle indicates caution or danger

Caution
Danger
• Indicates a potential hazard
• Indicates a definite hazard
• Black on yellow
• White on red
3. Information
 
A square indicates information

Emergency
General Information
• Indicates first aid, health, fire
• Indicates permission or
protection, fire fighting and
public information
