What is Behavior Modeling?
Behavior modeling is a training technique designed to improve interpersonal
competence. It is not an OD intervention per se, but we believe it should added to
the OD practitioner’s repertoire because it is such an effective tool and because of
problem with inter personal relations are common in the organizations. For
improving inter personal skills behavior modeling is an important training option.
Behavior Modeling
It First determine the most pressing problems facing by a target
group.
The problems can be absenteeism, unsafe work behaviour,
average performance etc
Behavior Modeling
A simple problem solving approach a rather straight forward
consist of three phases – problem identification, problem
solving, implementations, consisted of five behavioral skills:
Behavior description: the ability to describe behavior of self to
others in specific concrete terms and to avoid generalizations or
inferences drawn from observed behaviors.
Justification: the ability to clearly explain the impact of an
observed behavior on the individual, the observer, or the
organization
Behavior Modeling
Active listening: the ability to accurately reflect both content
and feelings of an others communication.
Participative problem solving: the ability to involve another,
meaningfully and appropriately in the process of solving a work-
related problem
Positive reinforcement: the ability to complement another in a
sincere and authentic manner.
Procedure of Behavior Modeling Technique
In this method, some kind of process or behavior is
videotaped and then is watched by the trainees. Games and
simulationsection is also included because once the trainees
see the videotape, they practice the behavior through role
plays or other kind of simulation techniques.
The trainee first observes the behavior modeled in the video
and then reproduces the behavior on the job
Procedure of Behavior Modeling Technique
The skills that are required to build up are defined
Then, trainees are given instructions that what specific learning points or
critical behavior they have to watch
Then the expert is used to model the suitable behaviors
Then, the trainees are encouraged to practice the suitable behavior in a
role play or through any other method of simulation
rainees are then provided with some opportunities to give reinforcement
for appropriate imitation of the model’s behavior
In the end, trainer ensures that trainees appropriately reinforces the
behavior on the work place
