Clam Shells used as
Retardant Agent in Candle Making
Introduction
This study is done to determine how clam shells are
used as an effective additive component in candle
making and as a retardant agent. The researchers
prepared one kind of shell namely: clam shells. The
researchers have noticed that there has been a sale
increase of buying candles so they decided to create a
candle with shells as a retardant agent.
Statement of The Problem
This study aims to answer these questions:
[Link] clam shells be an effective retardant agent?
[Link] the candle actually light up?
[Link] the researchers make a retardant agent in
making a candle with a few ingredients?
Scope and Limitations
This study limits to the length of time the retardant
agent can slow down the melting process than an ordinary
candle. Can the researchers make a retardant agent in
making a candle with a few ingredients?
Hypothesis
Clam shells is a good additive in making a retardant
agent for candles.
Type of Research
The research is experimental because the researchers
tested if the burning time is adequate and slower than
the ordinary candle and the length of time the retardant
agent can slow down the melting process than an
ordinary candle.
Table of Variables

• Candle • Commercial candle • Melting type
• Color of soot
• Crushed shells • Glow of the candle
The candle is smooth, slightly
greasy. It has a dusty smell. The
wax was hard when pressed on it
but could be scraped off a little
with a fingernail.

Conclusion
The researchers concluded that using clam shells as a
retardant agent for candles is actually effective and
useful. The experimented candle lit up and had the same
height of flame with the normal candle. The researchers
lit the candles for 15 minutes and measured the amount
of melted wax for each candle. The amount of melted
wax in the candle with clam shells was 5 ml while the
normal candle was 10 ml.
Recommendation
•The researchers recommended to use a food
processor than using a mortar and pestle to crush the
clam shells and use a plastic knife to cut off the excess
candle wax that may overflow out of the container when
pouring the wax.

Result
The candle which made use of clam shells as a retardant
agent with few ingredients in candle making, was a
success. Both candles were lighted up at the same time
continuously burning for fifteen minutes. The ordinary
candle had a faster melting rate of five milliliters melted
wax compared to the candle with the crushed clam shells
as a retardant agent. Therefore with the same density of
candle wax in a container, the one with a retardant agent
will burn for an additional fifteen minutes more.
