Product Development Process Overview

This document outlines the product development process. It begins with defining product development as conceiving, designing, and commercializing a product. It then describes the generic development process which includes understanding opportunities, developing visions and concepts, implementing concepts through detailed design, and commercializing through operations like manufacturing and marketing. Key aspects of the process discussed in more detail include concept development, identifying customer needs, generating product concepts, and selecting promising concepts to pursue further.

Concept Development (1 of 2)

 The concept development is the “front-end process” in

the product development process and it contains many
interrelated activities.

 Phase that demands more coordination among

functions than any other in the development process.

 This is the crucial stage where innovative products can

be conceived.

Identify Customer The goal is to understand customers’ needs and to

Needs effectively communicate them to the development team

Translate the customer needs into design objectives, user

Problem Definition requirements and desirable attributes and identify design
constraints.

Functions provide a precise description of what the product has to do.

Functions and Specifications are quantitative measurable criteria that the product
Specifications Should be design to satisfy. They are the measurable goals for the
Design team

Generate product concepts that may address the customer needs.

Concept Generation Include: external search, creative problem solving with a team,
systematic exploration of various solutions.

Activity where various product concepts are analyzed and

Concept Selection sequentially eliminated to identify the most promising concept (s).
