Distance learning, also
called distance education,
is a form of education in
which the main elements
include physical separation of
teachers and students during
instruction and the use of
various technologies to
facilitate student-teacher and
student-student
communication (Encyclopedia
Britannica, 2018).
Three Modalities of Distance Learning
1. Modular Distance Learning (Print or Non-Print)
-lessons are in well-designed, easy-to-follow self-
learning format either in hardcopy or softcopy.
2. Online Distance Learning - lessons are conducted
through virtual means like google classroom, zoom, or
Facebook.
3. TV /Radio Broadcast Instruction- television or
radio shows are of educational content and formatted
akin to teaching-learning process. (DepEd Order No. 12 s. 2020)

ADVANTAGES /
DISADVANTAGES
OF
DISTANCE LEARNING

I think one of the advantages of
distance learning, it’s self-paced.
Students study the materials at a
personal speed and intensity, without
having to wait for slower pace of the
average classroom.

1. Accessibility for those living away from
school
2. No waste of time or other resources in
transport, commuting to the school
3. Flexibility to study in any convenient
location with an Internet connection
4. Self-paced learning
5. Flexibility for those with irregular work
schedules (learners with formal or informal
employment)
6. Accessibility for those with restricted
mobility (e.g., handicapped, injured, sickly)
7. Accessibility for those with family
responsibilities (e.g., parents with young
children at home)

I think subjects
that require hands-on practical
experiences may be more difficult to
study using distance learning.

1. Learners undergo contemplation,
remoteness, as well as lack of interaction or
relation.
2. With respect to clarifications,
explanations, and interpretations, the e-
learning method may be less effective.

socialization skills it may have a negative
effect.
4. Since tests and assessments are not
personally supervised, it may be difficult, if
not impossible, to control or regulate
activities such as cheating.

5. Not all disciplines can effectively use

distance learning in education.
