Understanding Computer User Interfaces

The document discusses user interfaces for computers. It defines a user interface as the combination of hardware and software that allows people and computers to communicate. There are two main types of user interfaces: graphical user interfaces (GUI) and command line interfaces (CLI). A GUI uses icons, windows, menus and pointers to interact without typing commands, making it easier for non-technical users but more expensive. A CLI requires typing commands, making it faster and using less resources but more difficult for non-technical users.

BASIC OPERATIONS OF A COMPUTER

(USER INTERFACE)
BY [Link]
SPECIFIC OUTCOMES

AT THE END OF THIS LESSON, PS:

 Define User interface

 Identify types of User interface
 Differentiate the types of user interface.
WHAT IS A USER INTERFACE?

A user interface is a combination of hardware

and software that helps people and computers
to communicate with each other.
A user Interface controls how data and
instructions are entered into the computer,
including the display device, mouse and
keyboard that enable you to view and interact
with the computer software.
TYPES OF USER INTERFACE

There are basically Two types of

User interface.
Graphical User interface (GUI)
Command Line interface (CLI)
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE
 GUIs GUI (pronounced ‘goo-ey’) allow the user to interact with a computer (or MP3 player,
gaming device, mobile phone, etc.) using pictures or symbols (icons) rather than having to type
in a number of commands.
KEY FEATURES OF GUI

 Windows: windows display a computer program that divides the screen into
small portions.
 Icons: Icons denote small pictures that represent computer programs, files
and commands.
 Menu: allows the user to select various programs to run.
 Pointer: This refers to a symbol on a display screen that a user moves to
select commands, programs and objects.
KEY FEATURES OF GUI
ADVANTAGES

Easier for non- technical people.

Drag and Drop features
Looks nicer than text interface
User friendly
Suitable for disabled People
DISADVANTAGES

Difficult to develop and high

cost
Slower than command line
interface
Consume a lot of memory
COMMAND LINE INTERFACE

Ina command line interface (CLI), the

user has to know the commands, and
needs to type them in or press special
keys to execute commands and tasks.
The set of commands entered into the
computer is called command language.
COMMAND LINE INTERFACE
EXAMPLES OF CLI

MS-DOS ( MICROSOFT DISK OPERATING

SYSTEM )
CP/M (Control program for microcomputers
Apple DOS (Apple Disk Operating System)
ADVANTAGES

 Need less memory to operate

 Does not use much C.P.U processing time

A low resolution, cheaper monitor can be used

DISADVANTAGES

Itis confusing to non- technical

people
Large number of codes need to be
learnt
EXERCISE

1. Define the term User Interface.

2. Identify and explain the key features of a GUI.
3. Write down the major difference between GUI and CLI.
