Understanding the Wind Triangle

The document discusses how to correctly draw a wind triangle to determine the true wind direction and speed based on apparent wind information. It provides several key points: - A wind triangle relates the true wind and a ship's movement to determine the apparent wind. - True wind is required for log entries and weather reports, while apparent wind is what's shown by anemometers and observed funnel smoke/paper direction. - The direction is always from where the wind is blowing. - Proper scales must be used and shown.

WIND TRIANGLE

INTRODUCTION
• The direction & force of wind experienced
on a moving ship is called the apparent
wind
• This is the resultant of the true wind & the
movement of the ship
• To obtain the direction & speed of the true
wind, a simple triangle of forces would
have to be drawn
• For making LOG ENTRIES & WEATHER
REPORTS, 'true wind' is required
IMPORTANT POINTS TO MAKE THE
WIND TRIANGLE CORRECTLY
• The direction of the wind is always FROM
WHERE IT IS BLOWING
• If in the question its given, 'Wind direction
by observing of the line of waves' - then its
the TRUE WIND DIRECTION
• If in the question its given that 'wind speed
estimated by the appearance of the sea' -
then it is the TRUE WIND SPEED
• If in the question, if the direction & speed
of wind is given by 'anemometer' & 'wind
vane' , then it is APPARENT WIND
DIRECTION & SPEED. Please note -
anemometer & wind vane always show
apparent wind direction & speed
• If in the question, it is asked to state the
direction & speed of wind to be entered in
log book, you have to find out 'True wind
direction & speed. Please note - in the log
book, we always enter True wind direction
& speed
• If in the question, if its given 'funnel smoke
was blowing in _____ direction' , then it is
the apparent wind eg. if funnel smoke is
blowing is easterly direction (090⁰) then
apparent wind is coming from 270⁰
(westerly)
• Similarly, if its given 'paper or any other
light material is blowing in _____ direction,
then its the apparent wind (refer to above
example)
• If in the question, its asked 'what entry is to
be made in the weather report' , then you
have to find out the true wind direction &
speed & refer to the required table in the
weather coding book
• You should know the boxing of compass,
as sometimes instead of the degrees ,the
direction is mentioned. eg Easterly wind is
090⁰
• Mentioning what scale you have used is
very important. If your triangle doesn't
match the scale, your whole sum is wrong
• Use as big a scale as possible to get more
accurate results eg. 1cm = 1 knot or
atleast 1 cm = 2 knots
• Without scale you dont deserve any marks
& your answer should match with the scale
• Using a pro circle instead of a protractor
will make your work easy as it has all 360⁰
• Name the Triangle properly & mention all
the directions & speeds on the triangle as
well as separately
