Crack Propagation Analysis in T-Joint

Bits Pilani is an educational institution with campuses in Pilani, Dubai, Goa, and Hyderabad. The document discusses analyzing crack propagation in a T-joint welded structure made of quenched and tempered steel that was found to have a lack of penetration defect during inspection. It outlines the steps to model the crack in software, perform static and crack growth analyses to determine the stress intensity factor and propagation path of the crack over time until fracture occurs under a load of 120 MPa.

T Joint with LOP defect

P r ob l e m S t at e m e nt
In a critical welded structure by quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel of ASTM 517
‘F’ grade, an lack of penetration (LOP) defect was detected in a T-Joint location
during inspection. The T-Joint is subjected to a load of 120 MPa. Determine the path
of crack propagation and estimate the fatigue life of the joint before it fracture. ΔKth
= 130 MPa√mm, KC = 1600 MPa√mm, C = 1.27E-14, m = 3.4
