Edge Crack Analysis in Circular Hole

BITS Pilani is an Indian private university with campuses in Pilani, Dubai, Goa, and Hyderabad. The document then goes on to describe a problem statement about determining the fatigue life of a plate with an edge crack in a circular hole that is subjected to tensile pressure. It outlines learning outcomes around fracture toughness and edge cracks, and steps to import a file into analysis software, incorporate the initial crack, perform static and crack propagation analyses to determine how long it takes the crack to reach its critical length.

Plate with a edge crack in a circular

hole
P r ob l e m S t at e m e nt
In a particular application, a crack was initiated due to stress concentration
in the edge of a circular hole. Consider the near by location along with the
hole as a Plate of 60 x 30 x 5 mm with a hole of diameter 10 mm at centre
which is subjected to a tensile pressure of 80 MPa. ΔKth = 160 MPa√mm,
KC = 1600 MPa√mm, C = 5.21E-13, m = 3. Consider the initial crack
of 2 mm.
Determine fatigue life to which the crack
reaches its critical length.
