Cortex-A vs Cortex-R vs Cortex-
M
ARM Cortex-M
• The ARM Cortex-M is a group of 32-bit RISC ARM processor cores
licensed by Arm Holdings. They are intended for microcontroller use,
and have been shipped in tens of billions of devices.
• First chip manufactured in 2004.

ARM Cortex-A
• The ARM Cortex-A is a group of 32-bit and 64-bit RISC ARM processor
cores licensed by Arm Holdings. The cores are intended for
application use.
• Only the ARM Cortex-A includes a memory management
unit (MMU). Many modern operating systems require a MMU to run.
• First chip manufactured in 2005.
Cortex-A8 and Cortex-A7
ARM Cortex-R
• The ARM Cortex-R is a family of 32-bit RISC ARM processor cores
licensed by Arm Holdings. The cores are optimized for hard real-
time and safety-critical applications.
• Real time and safety critical features:
• Non overlapping memory regions
• Tightly coupled memory
• Increased exception handling in hardware
• Hardware division instructions
• Memory protection unit (MPU)
• First chip manufactured in 2011.
