“Islam” is an Arabic term which means
“Submission’’ Or ‘’Commitment” to Allah.
“Allah”, in Arabic word means “the” “God”,
to Muslims means “one who makes Islam’’.
Islam is a monotheistic religion that
teaches that there is only one divine being,
one supreme Creator of the universe.
Muslims believe that Islam is the true
religion of God revealed to humanity. It is
a universal religion that can be practiced by
anyone at any time and in every place. The
central concept of this way of life is total
submission to God.
What is a Muslim?
A “Muslim’’ is anyone who submits their will to the one
and only true God who is worthy
of worship, “Allah” (God). A Muslim also believes in the
Prophet “Muhammad” (peace be
upon him) as the last and final prophet of God.
Who is Allah?
“Allah’’ is the name God Almighty has given Himself as is
mentioned many times in the “Holy Quran”.
Muslims believe He has no partners in divinity, which
includes having no son, and nothing in the universe is
similar to Him. Muslims believe that Allah is the
Originator and Sustainer of the universe and that
he created human beings for only one purpose:
“to worship Him alone’’. (Quran, Chapter 112, Verses 1 – 4)
The Beginning of ISLAM
Understanding Islam requires concise view of the
Beginning Of this faith. Islam teaches that God has sent
prophets to Reveal, his purpose or will to humans.
“Muhammad”, who was born in 570 A.D, in Mecca,
is considered to be the final prophet. When he was
40 years of age, while meditating in a cave, it said that the
“angel Gabriel” appeared many times over the years,
Each time giving him messages. It said that
Muhammad has To memorize the revelations over and
over. Muhammad move to “al-madinah” (Medina),
“the city of the Prophet”. This migration,
in 622 C.E. marked the fist year of The Islamic calendar.
Then in 630 C.E., Muhammad conquered Mecca,
Removing all the idolatrous images and establishing it
As the centre of pilgrimages which continue until today,
Islam continued to spread to other parts of the world.

Core teachings of Islam
1. Belief in One God and the Testimony of Faith (Tawheed)
Tawheed is an Arabic term which refers to the unique belief
in the oneness of God. It is Islam’s concept of monotheism in
which the religion’s core tenets are built [Link] refers to the
belief that there is only one divine being that is worthy of
worship – Allah. When Muslims mention the name of
Allah, they are calling out to the one true God of the universe
2. Prayer (Salah)
The prayer is the second most important pillar in Islam, and it is the
first thing that a person will be held accountable for on the
Day of Judgment. If the person’s prayer is good, then that person will
be successful. But if the person’s prayer is incorrect in some way, then
that person will have achieved failure. There are five obligatory
prayers that every sane adult Muslim has to observe every
day. Allah tells us about these prayers in the Qur’an:
The five daily prayers are:
Fajr (early morning, before dawn)
Duhr (mid-day, just after noon)
‘Asr (mid afternoon)
Maghrib (just after sunset)
Isha (at night, after dark has fallen)
3. Giving Wealth to Zakat
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. It is a specified portion of a Muslim’s
wealth that is given to those in need. It is the amount given once a year
to support specific categories of people. The amount is about 2.5%
of total wealth which includes the following asset classes:
Gold and silver
Precious metals
Stocks and shares
Real estate
Cash
Agricultural livestock
These are the most common asset classes for which Zakat is paid from.
The linguistic meaning of ‘’zakat” is “that which purifies.” It is
considered to be a way for Muslims to purify their wealth and income.
4. Fasting in the month of Ramadan
‘’Fasting” in the month of Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam.
It refers to the practice of abstaining from eating food, drinking
liquids, and having intercourse from the break of dawn until sunset.
Similar to the pillars that have been mentioned already, fasting is
obligatory upon every sane, adult Muslim, male and female alike.
5. Hajj – The Pilgrimage to Makkah
The fifth and final pillar of Islam is to perform the hajj, the
pilgrimage to Makkah (Mecca). Every year millions
of Muslims make their way to the Kaba, the Sacred
House of Allah in Makkah to perform the pilgrimage.
t is one of the most significant forms of worship in Islam
and it demonstrates unity among the Muslims.
ISLAM: Three sources of teaching and guidance
1. The Holy Quran authored by the Creator-God Allah YHWH,
on the heart of Muhammad and it was memorized as soon as
it was revealed by Muhammad and his companions.
2. The Second source of Guidance is Sunnah. There were teachings
in Quran which needed demonstration by the Prophet
3. The canon law regulates a Muslim’s religious, social and political
Sense, the five legal category of human actions are as to follows:
Fard- this is considered as an absolute dury. This involves
Reward for punishment for failing to act.
Mustahabb-this pertains to commendable actions, involves
A reward but no punishment.
Mubah-pertains to permissible actions and legally indifferent
Makruh-pertains to reprehensible actions which are disapprove
But not punishable.
Haram-this pertains to forbidden actions and punishable.
What is Ramadan actually about?
“Ramadan” is the most sacred month
of the year for Muslims — the
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reportedly
said, "When the month of Ramadan
starts, the gates of heaven are
opened and the gates of
hell are closed and the devils
are chained."
During Ramadan, Muslims abstain
from eating any food, drinking
any liquids, smoking cigarettes,
and engaging in any sexual
activity, from dawn to sunset.
That includes
taking medication (even if you
swallow a pill dry, without
drinking any water).
Chewing gum is also prohibited
•Muslims can eat and drink, but only from before sunrise,
which is known as “suhoor” or the morning meal, and
after sunset, which is known as “iftar’’ or the evening meal.
•Muslims don’t abstain from specific foods during Ramadan,
other than the ones that are already prohibited,
like pork products and alcohol.
•Muslims can eat whatever they want for suhoor and
whatever they want for iftar, be careful about what
you eat Even though you can eat whatever you want,
if you’re trying to get the most out of Ramadan,
try to be careful about what you start your fast with
and what you open it with.
•You cant have sex Again, this only applies to
during the fasting hours, not during the night.
•You can spread good, It is a time for reflection and
doing good, Ramadan is a time of purification of the
soul. It is a time when Muslims love to do good
deeds, whether thats visiting the sick, giving to
charity or donating clothes and food to those less
fortunate. Its a month with so many blessings.
•You can’t smoke Because it’s something that
you ingest through your mouth, if you
smoke your fast breaks.
•You can’t take medicine This is more about
popping Advil or Tylenol if you have a
headache, or taking Pepto Bismal if you
feel bloated
•You cant drink water..
•You can’t talk smack Hang up,,
Remember how you’re supposed to spread good.
Ramadan isn’t just fasting from food, it’s also
a fast from bad deeds. It’s supposed to make you
self-conscious and self-aware.
•Try to avoid lying, gossiping, backbiting,
being rude, swearing, and the like.
•You cant chew gum As much as you might
want to grab a stick (or five) of gum
to get rid of that fasting breath,
you cantbecause itll break your fast.
