LI-FI Technology: Uses and Advantages

LI-FI is an optical wireless communication technology that uses light from LED bulbs to transmit data. It was created in 1997 and demonstrated in 2012. LI-FI uses visible light communication (VLC) to transmit data at much higher speeds than Wi-Fi. It has several advantages over Wi-Fi including higher speeds, lower cost, better security, and no interference. Potential applications of LI-FI include use in hospitals, oil rigs, underwater scenarios, and on airplanes.

• Histroy of LI-FI
• How LI-FI works
• Why only VLC
• Comparision of LI-FI with WI-FI

• Conclusion
Introduction :
• LI-FI means “Light Fidelity “
• It is fast and cheap optical version of wifi
• It uses LED to trasmit data
• Trasmission occurs in wireless format
• Its based on VLC
History of LI-FI :

• LI-FI technology was created in 1997 by Harald Hass

• Demonstrated in 2012.
• Its 100 times faster than wifi
• First intiated in countries like
• Germany
• Korea
• And Japan
How LI-FI works?
A ceiling based led lighting fixture encodes and modulates data
messages as light output at rapid speed to a photo detecting sensor
which Converts the changes in light intensity to electric current.
Why only VLC?

• LI-FI refers to VLC technology which delivers

1. High speed
2. Bidirectional
3. Networked mobile network
• It can transmit data and
• Even block which is 10k times more than the avaliable radio spectrum
• Transmission is blocked through the walls
Comparison with Wi-Fi
• Travels with higher speeds
• Cheapest
• Works better in higher density regions
• Connects to internet at a range of 10m while wifi 30 m
• LI-FI is right for privacy and security
Features :
• Capacity
• Availability
• Efficiency
• Less energy consumption
• Installed infrastructure
Advantages and disadvantages :
• High speeds
• Cost is efficient
• Fast and easy transmission of data
• Quality transmission

1. Special hardware needs.

2. Technological advancements
3. Interferences
Applications :

• Modern medical instruments

• Petrolem or chemical plants
• RF restricted areas
• Under water scenario
• Air plane scenarioo
Conclusion :
• In future all the objects and devices in our premisis can be connected
to IOTs with new kind of emerging technology that has vast potential
and large amount of avaliable band width.
• LI-FI is shortly alternative of WI-FI technology on day to day basis in
the field of wireless communcations
