Balloon Inflation Without Helium

This science fair project tests whether balloons can be blown up without using helium. The hypothesis is that balloons can be inflated using the reaction between baking soda and vinegar. The materials needed are balloons, baking soda, vinegar, plastic water bottles, and a funnel made from paper. The procedure involves making a funnel, adding vinegar to a bottle, adding baking soda through the funnel into the balloon, and placing the balloon into the bottle. Most friends and family responded that the experiment would work or may work. The conclusion is that the hypothesis was correct as the balloons inflated, though they did not float as well as with helium. The student learned that science can be fun when presented in an engaging way.

Conclusion /  My Hypothesis was right. Balloons can be blown up without helium. However I
Final Results did notice they don’t necessarily float as nice as helium but they do the job.
 What I learned doing this project is it was very fun. Science can be fun if
teachers incorporate “New concepts in a fun way”. My project left me thinking
about another ways I could use to blow my balloon the way I originally wanted
to. Perhaps using a soda? Hmm? But overall it was fun, and my kids enjoyed it
as well.I tried to think of something simple to create with my kids because
they are in pre school and kindergarten and they really enjoyed this project.
My son said Mom can we do a volcano erupting. I used to hate science but now
I think I actually like it, because science can be fun too.
