Dry Needling: Benefits and Contraindications

Dry needling is a procedure that inserts needles into trigger points in muscles to stimulate a twitch response and release tension. It aims to restore normal muscle function by treating trigger points, which are hyperirritable spots in fascia that are tender and cause pain. Dry needling is an evidence-based technique that stimulates specific trigger points leading to pain, while acupuncture treats the flow of energy through the body. Dry needling can help treat many conditions by reducing central sensitization and pain, improving range of motion, speeding healing, and releasing tight muscles. It is generally safe but has some contraindications like needle phobia or bleeding disorders.

Dry needling is a procedure in which a needle is inserted into the skin and muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point. to stimulate a
‘twitch’ response resulting in ‘release or relaxation’ The basis of the technique is to restore normal muscle function.
A trigger point is hyperirritable spots in the fascia surrounding skeletal muscle.
Located within a larger muscle group.
Tender to the touch, and touching a trigger point causes pain.

These palpable nodules are found in taut bands of muscle fibers and consist of “multiple contracted knots”

conditions:
How is it done and
what does it feel like?

Dry needling is a sterile technique utilising single use needles

gloves and alcohol wipes to limit the risk of infection.

So is it going to hurt …?

you won’t feel the insertion of the needle.

What you will feel is a dull ache ‘twitch’ response resulting in
‘release or relaxation’ which is completely normal.
What to expect ?

What to expect after treatment ?

Improved mobility
decreased pain
speeds up healing
releases tight muscles
and on track for improved function and activity

•Often, it takes just one session for a patient to see results. If they
don’t, IT may recommend a second treatment.
What are the b e n e fi t s of Dry Needling ?

 Reduce central sensitisation, (the CNS

hypersensitivity to pain).

 improved ROM along with decreasing pain.

 speeds up healing

 releases tight muscles to cause a relaxation

response.
Can it be used for everyone ?

Almost everyone !
Dry needling is suitable for most people but
there are some more high risk patients.
