Mental Illness in Canada: Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety disorders affect 12% of the Canadian population. Many people do not seek treatment because they consider their symptoms to be mild or normal, or because their symptoms interfere with help-seeking. There is no weakness associated with seeking help for feelings of being overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed. Anxiety disorders can cause significant personal and societal costs through lost wages, decreased productivity, reduced quality of life, and frequent use of health care services. Exercise and physical activity can help improve the symptoms of anxiety and help prevent anxiety through psychological and physical benefits, though they are not a cure.
