Freud's Psychosexual Development Stages

Freud's psychoanalytic theory proposed that personality develops through five psychosexual stages in childhood - oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital. Each stage involves libidinal/sexual energy becoming focused on different parts of the body. Issues or conflicts during stages can result in fixations that influence personality traits. While criticized, Freud's theory suggested experiences in early childhood influence personality development.

Freud’s

psychoana
lytic
theory
What is it?
Sigmund Freud based his theory on his
own observations of mentally disturbed
adults and believed that life was built
around tension and pleasure (Pilliteri,
2018). Freud also believed that all
tension was due to the build-up of libido
(sexual energy) and that all pleasure
came from its discharge.
2
What is it?
The theory that was built from these
concepts is called “Psychosexual Theory
of Development”. Freud proposed that
psychological development in childhood
takes place during five psychosexual
stages: oral, anal, phallic, latency, and
genital.

3
What is it?
The reason behind why they are called
psychosexual stages is because the
mentioned stages represents the fixation of
libido— the sexual drives or instincts of
human— on a specific area of the body.
Physical growth in certain areas of the
human body are important sources of
potential frustration (erogenous zones),
pleasure or both.
4
Words to remember
× Frustration - people cannot satisfy a specific stage yet they
are already proceeding to the next stage. One reason that
this happens in a particular stage a person changes to
another stage without developing the first one.

× Overindulgence - a person is satisfied with the development

but the person is unwilling to leave the stage.

× Fixation - the combination of the two which refers to a

person who is already "permanently invested" in a particular
stage.

Oral stage (birth to 1
year)
× The libido, which is centered in a baby’s mouth,
is the first stage of personality development.
According to Freud, mouth most satisfies the
libido when sort of things are put or placed in it.
× Smokers, nail-biter, finger-chewers, and thumb
suckers are the product of oral fixation; which is
also called the oral personalities of humans. The
reason why oral fixation happens is because of
stress in particular.

Anal stage (1 to 3 yea
r s)
× In this stage, libido is focused on the anus.
Herewith, child feels great pleasure from
defecating.
× The essence of this first conflict can determine
and discover the child’s future relationships with
the authority—in all forms. There can be two
outcomes of this stage; anal-retentive and anal
expulsive.
× The Developmental task is to form a sense of
autonomy versus shame. The child learn to do
things independently and make decisions for self. 17

Latent stage (6 years
to puberty)
× No further psychosexual development takes
place during this stage. Libido is dormant.
× Most sexual impulses are repressed during the
latent stage, and sexual energy can be
sublimated towards school work, hobbies, and
friendships.
× In this stage, their self-esteem continues to grow,
the children focuses on positive experience with
learning. It makes the child do things well.

Genital stage (pubert
y to adult)
× It is a time of adolescent sexual experimentation—the
successful resolution of which is settling down in a
loving one-to-one relationship with another person
× For Freud, the proper outlet of the sexual instinct in
adults was through heterosexual intercourse. Fixation
and conflict may prevent this with the consequence
that sexual perversions may develop.
× Developmental task is to form a sense of identity
versus role confusion. Adolescents learn who they are
and what kind of person they will be.

Conclusion
× Most of Freud’s ideas haven’t been fully accepted
by the majority in modern research.
× Freud relied on his knowledge of people seen and
looked at circumstances that lead to mental illness.
× Psychologists today dispute Freud’s psychosexual
stages as a legitimate explanation for how one’s
personality develops, but what we can take away
from Freud’s theory is that personality is shaped, in
some part, by the experiences we have in
childhood.
