INTRODUCTION
• In 1956 India took a major step towards the
establishment of its heavy engineering industry when
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., (BHEL) setup at Bhopal. It
progressed rapidly and three more factories went into
production in 1965. The main aim of establishing BHEL
was to meet the growing power requirement of the
country. BHEL appeared on the power map of India in
1969 when the first unit supplied by it was
commissioned at the Basin Bridge Thermal Power Station
in Tamilnadu. Within a decade, BHEL had commissioned
the 100th unit at Santaldih, West Bengal.
• In the world power scene, BHEL ranks among
the top ten manufacturers of power plant
equipment and in terms of the spectrum of
products and services offered, it is right on top.
• BHEL has its headquarters at New Delhi. Its
operations are spread over 11 manufacturing
plants and number of engineering and service
divisions located across the country.

TRANSFORMER
SECTIONS IN BHEL,JHANSI
• FABRICATION(BAY-0,1,2)- Fabrication shop is
the shop which deals with the manufacturing
of transformer and locomotive components
such as Tank, Plates, and Nuts and Bolts.
Fabrication shop is divided into three parts-
– Bay-0
– Bay-1
– Bay-2
BAY-3
It is split into two parts, half consist of machine shop and
the other half is consist of winding of dry type
transformer. This has basically three sections.
1. Machine section
2. Copper section
3. Tooling section
Type of machines used in section:-
[Link] cutter grinder
[Link] sharp machine
[Link] power press
[Link] furnace. Etc.
BAY-4
Here winding work of transformer is carried out.
BAY-5
It is core and punch section.
Core is the basic requirement of the transformer in this
bay various type of lamination of core is made, they are-
SIDE LEG
CENTRAL LEG
YOKE
BAY-6
This shop is divided into two parts one is traction
transformer winding and other one consist of assembly
of traction transformer.
BAY-7
In this bay various types of insulation are prepared
which is to be used in transformers.
Machine used
1. Rolling machine
2. Punching and drilling machine
3. Scarping machine etc.
BAY-8
It is involved in manufacturing of 132KV and 220KV.
Voltage transformer, Current Transformer and ESP
transformer.
Bay-9
In this bay power transformer are assembled. After
taking different input from different bays from bay 0to
bay 9, then assembly is done.
After assembling many tests are performed on the
transformer –
1. POLARITY TEST
2. ACCURACY TEST
3. INTER TURN INSULATION TEST
4. WINDING RESISTANCE
Many other sections are –
• Transformer commercial(TRC)
• Transformer Engineering(TRE)
• Technology
LOCOMOTIVE
This is the section in which train engines(locomotive)
are manufactured.
Here Electric and Diesel locomotives of up to 2600HP
are formed.
AC/DC locomotive are also formed up to 5000HP.
DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE
ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE
PROJECT
CORE BUILDING FOR THE POWER
TRANSFORMER
CORE BUILDING :-
CRGO(Cold rolled grain oriented silicon steel) is used
to build the core.
The grain of CRGO are oriented in the direction of
rolling.
CRGO is used to reduce hysteresis losses.
The thickness of these sheets are available either in
the dimension of 0.23mm or 0.27mm.
The lamination of these sheets minimizes the eddy
current losses.
BURR LEVEL:-
While cutting the edges of these sheets, there is
some generation of rough surfaces, these are known as
burr level.
CNC machines are used to control these burr levels.
Core building is done on three 65 t cradle, which
ensures minimum jerk during lifting the core.
UNLACING:-
This is basically the phenomena of removal of top
end frame of the core assembly so that the coils can
be mounted on the core.
RELACING OF CORE:-
The top yoke is again attached to the rest of the core;
the sheets are attached one by one or in packets to
the core limb in the erect position. Then the job is
dipped in oil and then heated to remove any kind of
moisture in it.
