Material Handling Systems in Logistics

This document discusses material handling systems and how they can improve productivity in logistics. It defines material handling, describes the typical stages of handling materials in a warehouse, and lists objectives to minimize costs, prevent damage, and ensure safety. It also discusses decisions around volume, speed and product characteristics. It then outlines different types of material handling systems from manual to automated, and provides examples of common equipment like forklifts, conveyors and sorting devices used in mechanized and semi-automated systems.

MANAGEMENT
AGENDA

• Definition of Material Handling

• Stages
• Objectives
• Decisions
• Material Handling systems
• Equipments
• Thank you
 DEFINITION
• Material handling is the art and science involving the moving,
packing and storing of substances in any form
• Uses different methods of transport such as road, rail, ship or air
 STAGES
• Unloading the incoming material from transport vehicles
1

• Moving the unloaded material to the assigned storage place in the

2 warehouse

3 • Lifting the material from its storage place during order picking

• Moving the material for inspection and packing

4

• Loading the packages, boxes or cartons on to the transport

5 vehicles
OBJECTIVES

• Minimize cost of material handling

• Prevention of damage to the materials

• Safety in material handling by improvement of working

conditions
MATERIAL HANDLING
SYSTEMS DECISIONS
• Nature of the
product( hazardous,
perishable,
• Volumes to be handled • Productivity crushable)

• Product characteristics
• Speed in handling (weight, size, shape)

MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEMS

• Manual
• Mechanized
• Semiautomatic
• Automatic

7
 MANUAL SYSTEM
 Cheapest and most common method of material movement in warehousing

 In developed countries, the use of manual system is discouraged

 Quite popular in developing countries where there is a availability of cheap labor

 Limitations are low volume, slow speed, distance

 MECHANIZED SYSTEM
 Layout of the warehousing

 The mechanized equipment requires the space for the free movement across the warehouse
 EQUIPMENTS IN MECHANIZED SYSTEM

• Wheeled Trolley

• Forklift Truck

• Pallet Truck

• Tow-lines

• Carousels

• Cranes
WHEELED TROLLEY

• Hand held trolleys are efficient for

handling small volumes over a short
distance

• For higher volumes and longer

distances, use of powered trolley is
preferred
FORKLIFT TRUCK

• Work horse of the

warehouse, reliable, easy to
operate

• Moving larger loads over a

longer distance

• Moving the load vertically

and horizontally

• Handles pallets, boxes,

cartons
PALLET TRUCK

• Basic form of a forklift

• Intended to move pallets

within a warehouse
CAROUSELS
• Used in order picking
system

• Reduces the storage

space and the manpower
involved in order
picking process

• It is integrated to a
computerized system
TOWLINES

• Towlines are used for the continuous

movement of the material

• It consists of a number of trailers

which moves across the warehouse for
placing to or picking the material for
storage or shipping

• They are custom designed for a

particular product-volume application
CONVEYOR
• Conveyor systems are mechanical
devices or assemblies that
transport material with minimum
effort
ROLLER CONVEYOR

• A conveyor consisting of
fixed location rollers over
which materials are moved
by gravity or propulsion
BELT CONVEYOR

• Most common type of conveyor used

for moving the material

• The endless belt moves on two rotating

shafts placed apart
OVERHEAD CRANE

• Used for moving very heavy

items over a short distance

• These cranes have the moving

and lifting mechanism installed
on the fixed girders at the roof
of the building

• Items such as steel plates, coils

are handled
STACKER CRANE

• Operate on fixed rails at base and top

of each side

• The stacker cranes are normally used

in large warehouse where large
number of pallets are to be picked
and sacked
 SEMI AUTOMATIC SYSTEM
 This warehouse is a mixture of mechanized and automatic handling equipment

 The automation is done in parts

 Types Automatic Guide

Vehicle System

Robotics

TYPES

Sorting
Device
 SORTING DEVICE

• These are normally used along with powered conveyors

• They sort materials based on the sorting code

• Increases the system productivity through speed, accuracy and elimination of manual labour

 ROBOTICS

• Are used in extreme temperature environment such as cold storage or deep freezer

• Performs without fatigue and is accurate

 AUTOMATIC GUIDED VEHICLE SYSTEM

• AGVS is a mechanized material handling equipment without an operator

• The system consists of four components ,e.g. vehicle for movement, pick up and drop off location,

guidance system and a computer controlled system

• Uses latest IT technology and video technology

 AUTOMATIC SYSTEM

• The automated machines are custom built and attract heavy investments

• Human factor is minimized substantially and restricted to programming

and controls
