Pepper Harvesting Equipment Design

This document outlines a student project to design and develop a pepper harvester and separator. It provides an introduction stating that pepper harvesting is currently done manually which is tedious. It then lists contents to be covered. Literature on existing harvesters and separators is reviewed. The objectives are to design a plucker to harvest pepper without climbing trees and a mechanical separator to reduce berry damage. The problem of manual harvesting and threshing is discussed. A work plan is provided with activities outlined over several months.

INTRODUCTION

• Black pepper is known as “king of spices”.

• In India, black pepper is mainly grown in Kerala, TamilNadu and
Karnataka.
• Harvesting and threshing of pepper is usually done manually and it is
a tedious task.
• At present the pepper harvesting is done manually by the laborers
climbing on the trees.
• Threshing is done by trampling with legs to separate the peppercorn.

OBJECTIVES

• To design and develop a pepper plucking equipment and a pepper

separator to facilitate pepper harvesting in the agricultural sector.
• To carry out literature review on plucking and threshing machines and
understand the latest trends, present practices and collect relevant data.
• To develop a device for plucking of pepper in which pepper could be
harvested untouched by hands and without climbing the tree.
• Designing and fabricating a cost effective mechanical pepper separator
machine which would reduce the berry damage during threshing
process and automate the separation process.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The important problem identified in the field of Pepper harvesting is
the tedious manual plucking of peppercorns from the pepper vines. In
manual threshing the pepper is separated from its spikes by spreading
the pepper spikes on a large level surface and stamping them manually
with bare feet. It has got many disadvantages like more damage to the
pepper, less efficient, labor intensive and slow. So introduction of
mechanization in pepper harvesting field has become a necessity.

SOCIETY BENEFITS
• In agricultural sector, the plucking and threshing of pepper made
more easy.
• Helps to reduce human effort and saves time.
SCOPE FOR FUTURE WORK
• High HP motor can be used in future to get greater output and
automatic feeding of the the pepper to the pepper separator machine
can be done.
• The pepper plucker can be converted to fully automated robot with
sensors for image detection and cutting mechanism.
