Rudder Drop Measurement and Impact

The document discusses different parts of a ship's rudder system. It describes pintle bearings which support unbalanced rudders using pintles fitted into gudgeons. It identifies the upper pintle as the locking pintle and lower pintle as the bearing pintle. It also mentions carrier bearings, rudder drop measured by a trammel gauge, and jumping clearance to restrict upward movement of the rudder.

Pintle bearings. Unbalanced rudders are supported by pintles
which is fitted into gudgeons.

Gudgeon is part of rudder post. Pintle rotates in gudgeons.

There can be one or more gudgeons in the rudder post.

Upper pintle is called locking pintle.

Lower pintle is called bearing pintle. Bearing pintle bears weight of

the rudder if carrier bearing fails.

Middle pintle ( if available ) is called ordinary pintle.

• Due to wearing at the thrust face of carrier bearing
the rudder may drop down by a small distance. This is
called rudder drop. This drop is measured by trammel
gauge. Trammel gauge is fitted in the steering gear
flat. Original reading when rudder is new is marked
zero.
• This scale is checked periodically and reading is
recorded.

Jumping clearance
• The rudder is in water. Due to waves, floating objects
there can be upwards impact on the rudder. This will
move rudder upwards. Such upward movement of
rudder will also move rudder stock upwards and will
cause damage to tiller or cross-head in the steering
gear compartment. To restrict this upward movement
jumping stopper is provided. Clearance between
jumping stopper and stern is called jumping
clearance.
