Introduction to Experimental Research Design

The document discusses research design, specifically true experimental design. It defines research design as a blueprint that guides planning, implementation, and analysis of a study. True experimental design has three key characteristics: manipulation of the independent variable, control through a control group, and randomization to assign subjects and eliminate bias. It provides examples of different types of true experimental designs that incorporate these characteristics.

Introduction

Research design is the framework

or guide used for the planning,
implementation and analysis of a study
 it is a systematic plan of what is to
be done, how it will be done, and how
the data will be analysed
Experiment is the most scientifically
sophisticated research method
It is observation under controlled
condition
Definition
• Research design : it can be defined as a blue print of
research study, with enables the researcher to know
on whom, what, when, and how the study will be
conducted.
• Experimental research design are concerned with the
examination of the effect of independent variable on
the dependent variable , where the dependent variable
is manipulated through treatment , and the effect of
the treatment is observed on the dependent variable
• According to Riley, experimental research design is a
powerful design for testing hypothesis of causal
relationship among variables
Concept
• True experimental research design are those
where researcher have complete control over
extraneous variables & can predict
confidently thet the observed effect on the
dependable variable is only due to the
manipulation of the independent variable.
Essential characteristics

• A true experimental research design must

essentially consist of the following theree
characteristics:
Manipulation
Control
Randomization
Manipulation
• Manipulation refers to conscious control of
the independent variable by the researcher
through treatment or to observe its effect on
the dependent variable
• In other words . It is conscious act by the
researcher, where he or she varies the
independent variable & observes the effect
that manipulation has on the dependent
variable of interest

Control

• Control is another essential element of true

experimental design
• Control refers to use of control group&controling
the effect of variables on the dependent variable
in which researcher is interested
• The subject in the control and experimental grup
are similar in number& characteristic, but the
subject in the control ggroup recieve no
experimental treatment or any intervention at all.
• Recieve the planned treatment and
comparison is made with the control group to
observe the effect of this treatment.
Randomazition

• Randomazition means that every subject has

an equal chance of being assigned if the study
subject on random basis
• The subject under experimental or control
group , chances of systematic bias is liminated
• Used in true experimental design to minimize
the threat or internal validity
