Water Treatment in Industrial Training

This presentation summarizes the student's industrial work experience at the Kebbi State Water Board. The student discusses water treatment processes like coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. Key steps in water treatment include the addition of alum for turbidity removal, lime for pH adjustment, and chlorine for disinfection. The student concludes that the internship experience provided valuable exposure to water treatment chemistry and processes. Recommendations include improved funding and stipends to support more effective vocational training programs.

Place of IT and What they Do
 Kebbi State Water Board (Beside First bank B/K)
• The establishment carry out the following;
 Treatment
Maintenance
Control
Installation and
Management of water works and service in the
state
Place of IT and What they Do Cont.
• Ensure the supply of potable water of adequate
quantity and quality to the community

• Encourage the conduct of research for the

purpose of carrying out its functions.

• Submit the result of such research to Hon.

Minister for policy formation relating to water
supply and pollution control in the territory.

Cont.

In this presentation, I will

discuss about
Water Treatment
WATER TREATMENT
What is water
• Chemical compound consisting of 2 hydrogen
atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

• Other names are: oxidane, dihydrogen

monoxide, hydrogen hydroxide , dihydrogen
oxide, hydric acid, hydrohydroxic acid, hydrol,
hydrogen oxide
What are sources of water?
1. Surface water eg. Lakes, rivers, reservoirs etc

[Link] water it discharges through

springs
What is water treatment?

Water treatment is any process

that makes water more acceptable
for a specific end use. The end use
include agricultural use, industrial
use and domestic use.
Why do we need to treat water?

• To remove contaminants from raw

water to produce water that is pure
enough for human consumption
without any short term or long term
risk of any adverse health effect.
What do I need to treat water?

• Aluminiumsulphate (alum).Al(So4)3
• Function
• To remove turbidity (by coagulation and
flocculation). Coagulation take place
after mixing Alum with raw water.
What do I need to treat water?
• Calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime).Ca(OH)2
• Function
• PH control, correction or neutralization
• Water PH is tested after alum is added.

• The standard PH of water 6.2-7.8

• Chlorine (disinfectant).
Flow chart for water treatment

High lift pumping machine

Filtration chamber reservoir

Quality control
• Palin Test photometer (chemicals
contaminants eg Fe (0-10mg/l) Cl (0-250mg/l),
Mn (0-0.030mg/l)
• Physicochemical analysis (colour, taste etc)
• Biological properties (presence or absence of
microbes) using microscope
Effects of consuming untreated
water
Consumption of acidic water leads to ulcer.

Consumptiom of water containing pathogens can

cause cholera and quick hunger.

Consumption of alkaline water leads to indigestion of

carbohydrate.
Conclusion
• The period of industry attachment was a period
of learning and great exposure to the treatment
and chemistry of water. It showed me the
prospects of chemistry as a profession of worth
and respect.
• The SIWES program has toughened me to face
the challenging times of the present and future.
• It also created an avenue of meeting with certain
caliber of persons during the training.
Recommendation
• The program is a good way of introducing students to real work
environment, thus adequate funding should be provided and the
government to enhance the performance and effectiveness of the
scheme.

• Trainees should be given monthly packages in their places of

industrial training to ameliorate the cost of transportation and
other logistics during the SIWES period.

• The SIWES training is an exercise that should be encouraged both

by government, NGO’s and the organized private sector in ensuring
it fulfills its objective of providing skilled labor that will meet the
labor needs of the Nigerian economy.
