Process Performance Simulation Analysis

This document outlines an objective to simulate performance metrics for different production processes. It defines key terms like cycle time, capacity, flow time and provides assumptions for worker-paced lines. Five example problems are presented: 1) a three-step serial and parallel process, 2) a four-step process with cross-training, 3) asymmetric and symmetric sub-assembly, 4) batch processing, and 5) a three-step doughnut making process with batches. The document aims to calculate how changing process parameters and configurations impacts cycle time, capacity, flow time and resource utilization.

PROCESS ANALYTICS

SIMULATION
Erfan Rezvani, PhD
Fall 2109
Objective
• To calculate or simulate performance matrices for different
processes.
• Varying process parameters (e.g. capacity, processing times) and
configurations.
Assumptions:
1. Worker-paced lines
2. Workers are specialized to the task
3. Workers are present for the entire processing time
4. If multiple workers are assigned to a task they work on
different products than simultanously working on single
product.

2
Process performance measures
• Activity times
(or service time, processing time): time/flow unit

• Capacity: numbers of resources /activity time

 Cycle Time: 1/ flow rate

The time between the completions of two subsequent flow units.
How fast the process is creating output.

 Flow time= average throughput time

 Min. throughput time= minimum time required for a flow unit to pass through the
process (rush orders)

3
Problem 1 : three step process
1- Simple setup (series)
2- Process steps with multiple workers
3- Process with parallel steps

Find impacts on Cycle time, capacity, rush order throughput (flow) time, labor
utilizations of steps and that of the entire process.

Problem 2 : four step process

1- Simple setup (series)
2- Process steps with cross training (a fifth workers floats between stations A & D)
3- All cross trained
4- With inventories (how much in the buffers?)

4
Problem 3 : sub-assembly
1- Asymmetrical
2- Symmetrical

Problem 4 : Batch processing

Problem 5 : Doughnut making

process (with batch)
1-three step process: mixing, forming, flavoring (2 parallel workers)
2- the impact of batch size on process capacity (bottleneck)
