Covered by
insulating sheath
UTP categories
Category 1 Voice only (Telephone)
Category 2 Data to 4 Mbps (Localtalk)
Category 3 Data to 10Mbps (Ethernet)
Category 4 Data to 20Mbps (Token ring)
Category 5 Data to 100Mbps (Fast Ethernet)
Category 5e Data to 1000Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet)
Category 6 Data to 2500Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet)
Cat5e cable
1000Mbps data capacity
For runs of up to 90 meters
Solid core cable ideal for structural
installations (PVC or Plenum)
Stranded cable ideal for patch cables
Terminated with RJ-45 connectors
Telecommunications Industry Association
(TIA) and the Electronic Industries
Association (EIA)
is the industry that
govern all aspects of
cable installation,
such as regulations
on cabling distances
and connector
configurations.

Ethernet cable
a network cable used
to connect devices on
local area networks
such as PCs, routers,
and switches.
Computer Network
is composed of two or more computers
that share data and resources.
Hub
used as the central
object on which
computers and other
devices are
connected
Local Area Network (LAN)
is a computer network that interconnects
computers within a limited area such as a
residence, school, laboratory, university
campus or office building.
Ethernet/LAN Cabling
the process of creating cable used to
create a network that interconnects
computers and other network devices.
Straight-through cable
a type of twisted pair cable that is used in
local area networks to connect a
computer to a network hub such as a
router.
Making connections - Tools
Crimping Tool
A tool used to crimp
UTP cable to RJ-45
connector.
Making connections - Tools
Network Cable Tester
It is used to check if the
network cable being
spliced or terminated is
functional.
Making connections - Tools
Wire Stripper
A tool used to remove
the outer jacket or
insulation of the UTP
cable.

Unshielded Twisted-Pair Cable (UTP)
UTP is network cable that consists of up to 4
pairs of wires. Each pair is twisted around
each other at a different rate and the entire
cable is encased in a protective plastic
covering.
Steps in creating a Straight-through Cable
1. Prepare all materials needed.

2. Remove the outer jacket/insulation of
the cable to about 1 – 1½” of insulating
sheath. Avoid cutting into conductor
insulation

3. Untwist the cable pairs, sort wires by
insulation colors.

4. Straighten and flatten the wires between
your thumb and forefinger, arrange them
based on T568B color code.

Steps in creating a Straight-through Cable
5. Trim the untwisted wires evenly to about
1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.

6. The exposed copper pins on the RJ-45
connector must be facing towards you.
Ensure that the wires are in order
from left to right starting from pin
1.
Steps in creating a Straight-through Cable
7. Insert the wire firmly into the RJ-45
connector until all wires are in order from
left to right starting from pin 1.
Steps in creating a Straight-through Cable
8. Visually inspect the cable and ensure the
right wire codes match the pin numbers
and the eight wires should be pressed
firmly against the end of the RJ-45
connector.
Steps in creating a Straight-through Cable
9. Place the RJ-45 connector and cable into
the crimping tool and crimp the RJ-45
connector until you hear a click from it.
Steps in creating a Straight-through Cable
10. Repeat all the previous steps with the
other end of the cable.

10. Test the cable
using the network
cable tester.
Let’s go to work!
