Curriculum Development Models Explained

Ralph Tyler and Hilda Taba proposed two models of curriculum development: [1] Tyler's model focused on four basic principles: determining educational purposes, selecting educational experiences to attain those purposes, organizing experiences effectively, and evaluating whether purposes are being attained. [2] Taba improved on Tyler's model by making it linear. Her seven-step model started with diagnosing learner needs and societal expectations, then formulating objectives, selecting content, organizing content, selecting experiences, organizing activities, and determining evaluation. [3] Unlike Tyler, Taba believed teachers who implement the curriculum should participate in developing it, allowing for more input in her grassroots approach.
