Intake Well Design for Water Supply

Intake structures collect and convey water from surface sources like rivers, lakes, and reservoirs to water treatment plants. They contain screens to filter out debris, a foundation, conveying pipes, pumps, sumps, and maintenance platforms. Intake wells should be located near water treatment plants, in turbulent and silt-free zones, upstream from waste disposal, away from navigation channels, and allow for future expansion and accessibility. Typical intake wells draw from canals, reservoirs, and rivers.

What are Intake Structures?

• Intake structures are used for collecting water

from the surface sources such as river, lake,
and reservoir and conveying it further to the
water treatment plant. These structures are
masonry or concrete structures and provides
relatively clean water, free from pollution,
sand and objectionable floating material.
Components in Intake well
• Screen to prevent living and non living things
from entering
• Foundation
• Conveying pipe or conduit
• Pump with suction pipe with stand by
• Sump well
• Maintenance platform
• Level indicator
• Power source
• Lighting Arrangement
• MWL warning system
• Approach road
• Proper Security system
Locating Intake Well
• To be close to the water treatment plant
• To be located in turbulent and silt free zone
• On the upstream of WW disposal point
• Away from navigation channel
• Future possible expansion
• Easily accessible at all times
