Find the Epicenter: Science 10 Activity

This document describes an activity to locate the epicenter of an earthquake using triangulation. Students are given hypothetical seismic data from three stations and must determine the arrival times of P and S waves. They then calculate the distance from each station to the epicenter and draw circles on a map with radii equal to these distances. Where the circles intersect is the epicenter. Questions ask students to identify the epicenter location, issues with only two data points, distance to one station's epicenter, and importance of determining the epicenter. The conclusion is that three stations are needed for triangulation and finding the epicenter is important for safety.

ACTIVITY #1

GROUP 5
10-RIZAL
I. TITLE
“FIND THE CENTER”
II. OBJECTIVE
•Locate the epicenter of an
earthquake using the
triangulation method.
III. Materials
• Hypothetical records of earthquake
waves
• Philippine map
• Drawing compass and ruler
IV. Procedure
[Link] the data showing the
difference in the arrival time of
P-wave and S-wave on three
seismic recording stations.
2. Compute the distance of the epicenter
from each of the stations.

3. Choose one of the recording stations and

measure the computed distance on the map
scale. Set your compass for that computed
distance.
4. Center your compass on the station you
have chosen. Draw a circle

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the rest of the

stations. You should get three
circles that intersect or nearly intersect at a
point. This intersection is the epicenter
V. Table
Time difference in Distance of
Recording station the arrival time of P- epicentre from the
wave and S-wave station (cm)
(seconds)
Batangas 44.8

Puerto Princesa 32

Davao 38.4
VI. QUESTIONS
Q1. Where is the epicenter of this hypothetical
earthquake?
Q2. What difficulty will you encounter if you only
have data from two recording stations?
Q3. What is the distance of the epicenter from the
seismic station?
Q4. What do you think is the importance of determining
the epicenter of an earthquake?
VII. ANSWERS
1. The epicenter of the hypothetical earthquake is in Negros.
2. The difficulty you’ll encounter is finding the epicenter if you only
have two data record from the seismic station.
3. 9,000 km
4. The importance of determining the epicenter of an earthquake is to be
aware if the earthquake is near in your area and of course, for us to be
safe.
VIII. CONCLUSION
Therefore we conclude that you need 3 seismic
stations to find the epicenter of an earthquake
and finding the epicenter is really important to
us.
