MEASURING
TOOLS
TAPE MEASURE -
usually made of cloth
or plastic, this is used
for taking body
measurements as
well as cloth and
other materials.
RULER
-This is used to
measure and
draft lines on a
fabric or pattern.
METAL GAUGE
-This is movable
marker that measures
short distances and
correct thickness such as
distance between
buttons, pleats and
hems.
HEM GAUGE
-This is used to
measure the
correct hem of the
cloth.
FRENCH CURVE
-This tool is used in
drafting curves in
the pattern of the
arm, neckline and
crotch.
METER STICK or
YARD STICK
-This is used to
measure fabric.
TAILOR’S SQUARE
-Used for the
correct
measurement of
lines in the right
angle.
CUTTING TOOLS
EMBROIDERY
SCISSORS
-These small scissors
are designed for
needle work.
DRESSMAKING
SHEARS
-These big scissors
are designed for
needle work.
PINKING SHEARS
-These are scissors
with serrated blades or
zigzag edges used for

prevent it from fraying
or ravelling.
LIGHT TRIMMERS
-Used for small
cutting, this tool has
one point blunt to
prevent the fabric
from snagging
BRENT-HANDLED
SHEARS
-Shears with straight
blades and a handle that is
off-set at an angle allows
the lower blade to stay flat
in a cutting surface.
SEWING SCISSORS
-These scissors
are used for
trimming seams
and facings.
THREAD CLIPPERS
-A small tool used
for snipping
thread.
STITCH RIPPER or
SEAM RIPPER
-This tool is used to
open seams as well as
other detailed and to
remove stitches.
