Understanding the Genetic Code Basics

1. The genetic code specifies the amino acid sequences of proteins by using nucleotide sequences of mRNA. Each three-letter "codon" in mRNA corresponds to a single amino acid. 2. There are 64 codons total, with 61 codons specifying 20 different amino acids. tRNA molecules with complementary anticodons carry amino acids to the ribosome during protein synthesis based on codon-anticodon base pairing with mRNA.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson I shall able to:

1. I can summarize the necessity of the genetic code

2. I can explain the relationship between the t RNA, anticodon, codon
and m RNA.
How is the information in a
gene encoded?
GENETIC CODE
Genetic Code – is an RNA code specifies amino acid that make up
proteins.

The genetic code is the system of nucleotide sequences of m

RNA that determines the sequences of amino acid in protein.

The letters A, G ,T, C correspond to the nucleotides found in

DNA.

They are organized into codons

What are codons?
• Each three- letter “word” in m RNA
• Consists of three consecutive bases that specify a single amino
acid

64 codons

61 codons for 20
amino acids
Valine, Leucine & Isoleucine
Alanine, Arginine, Glutamine
Lysine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic Acid
Proline, Cysteine, Threonine
Methionine, Histidine, Phenylalanine
