Stages of Human Embryogenesis

The document describes the stages of early human development from fertilization through embryo and fetal development. It explains the key events in early embryonic development including fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation, and implantation. The stages discussed are gamete formation, fertilization, development of the embryo and fetus, gastrulation, organogenesis, implantation, and development of the embryo and fetus through birth.

OBJECTIVE:
 Describe details about the structures,
development of human embryo at different
stages including fertilization,
cleavage,gastrulation and implantation.
I. The Stages of Early Development

• Gamete
formation
• Fertilization
• Development
of the embryo
and fetus
Activates egg and brings
together the nucleic of
sperm and egg

Mammalian
fertilization- Cortical Cortical Reaction-Lets
Reaction hardens a only one sperm in and
zona as a block to then blocks off
polyspermy
• Involves three events:
• 1. Recognition and penetration of the egg by the sperm
2. Activation of the egg cell which initiates development
• 3. Fusion of the egg and sperm nuclei
A period of rapid cell division
-

without growth

Blastomeres - Large number of cells

-
-Rearranges the blastula to form a
Gastrulation three- layered embryo with a primitive
gut
-Transforms blastula into agastrula
-The gastrula contains the archenteron and
three embryonic germ layers: the ectoderm,
the endoderm, and the mesoderm
Organogenesis
Organs form from the three
-

embryonic layers
Trophoblast begins
formation of fetal
portion of the
placenta.

IMPLANTATION
When the embryo reaches the uterus it is

known as a blastocyst.
The blastocyst adheres to the lining of the
• uterus and implantation follows.

The placenta forms when finger-like
projections of the embryonic cells
• become embedded into the uterus.
Development of the Embryo and Fetus
• The embryonic stages ends eight weeks
after fertilisation. The organism is known as
a fetus and is distinctly human.

For the rest of gestation the organs continue to
develop and tissue becomes more specialised.
Birth
• Birth, or parturition, is under the control of hormones.
