PDCCH and Channel Mapping Overview

The document describes the mapping of various channels and signals in the LTE downlink frame structure. It explains that PDCCH is mapped to the first 1-3 symbols of each subframe using subcarriers except those used for reference signals and PHICH. PCFICH is mapped to the first symbol and PHICH to the first 1-3 symbols. It also summarizes the mapping of PBCH, PMCH, PDSCH, synchronization signals, and reference signals across symbols and subcarriers in the LTE downlink frame.

PDCCH Mapping

• 1st to 3rd OFDM symbols in every sub-frame, using all sub-carriers

except those that are occupied by reference signal and PHICH. Size of
PDCCH is configurable from 1 to 3 OFDM symbols.
PCFICH mapping
• 1st OFDM symbol of every subframe
PHICH mapping
• 1st to 3rd OFDM symbols of every subframe. The PHICH is configurable
to 1 or 3 OFDM symbols
PBCH mapping
• 1st to 4th OFDM symbol in slot #1 of sub-frame #0 using 72 sub-
carriers (1.25 MHz) once per 10ms
PMCH mapping
• PMCH is using all OFDM symbol resources, except those that are
reserved for MBSFN reference signals and control channels
PDSCH mapping
• PDSCH is sharing all OFDM symbol resources, except those that are
reserved for ref & sync signals and control channels
Synchronization signal mapping (PSS and SSS)
• 6th and 7th OFDM symbol (extended cyclic prefix: 5th and 6th OFDM
symbol) in 1st and 6th sub-frame, using 72 sub-carriers (1.25 MHz)
once per 10ms
• 6th -> SSS
• 7th -> PSS
Reference Signals
• The symbol 0, 4, 7, 11 contains the downlink reference signals known as the cell specific reference
signals, which are mapped to every sixth subcarrier in these symbols, the start index for mapping
of these is determined by the cell ID of the eNodeB.
• These reference signals are unique to every antenna, and hence, if more than 1 antenna is used
for transmission, there would be more reference signals mapped in the subframe.
• Similar to the cell specific reference signals, there is also UE specific reference signals which are
of similar nature but are used only in case of beam forming. These reference signals are used by
the UE for downlink channel estimation and equalization.
