Control Valves: Components and Operation

This document provides information about control valves, including their components, operational forms, fail safe operation, terminology, characteristic curves, and specifications. It describes the main parts of a control valve such as the actuator, body, trim, and stem. It explains how control valves operate using air pressure to open and close the valve. It also outlines important valve specifications like operating temperature and pressure, end connections, materials of construction, and actuator type.

CONTROL VALVES
Components Of Control Valve

 Actuator • Travel Indicator

 Body • Stem
 Trim • Body Gaskets
 Diaphragm • Yoke
 Diaphragm plate • Hand wheel
 Actuator stem • Limit switches
 Actuator spring • Solenoid valve
 Seat • Air Filter regulator
 Plug
Control Valve Operational Forms

 AIR TO CLOSE:- 3 PSI – FULL OPEN

 15 PSI – FULL CLOSE

 AIR TO OPEN :– 3 PSI – FULL CLOSE

 15PSI – FULL OPEN

 At pressure higher than 3 psi applied on

diaphragm, it will start overcoming the spring
force and move diaphragm plate which in turn
moves stem connected and operates the plug.
Fail Safe Operation

 AIR FAIL TO OPEN:-

Or Air to Close

 AIR FAIL TO CLOSE:-

Or Air to Open
Terminology

Flow Co-efficient (Cv) :-

The flow of water through the valve

 in U.S gallon per minute

 at full lift
 with a pressure drop across the valve of 1 psi.
Characteristic Curves

QUICK OPENING
FLOW %

LINEAR

EQUAL %

VALVE LIFT %
 Linear :-
Flow is directly proportional to lift at constant
pressure drop

 Equal Percentage :-
 Flow changes by a constant percentage of its
instantaneous values for each unit change in lift.

Quick Opening :- Flow

increases rapidly in a linear relationship with plug
lift reaching a max. value at a low lift.

Specification Of Valves

 Operating temperature - Deg. C

 Design Pressure / temp.
 End connection
 MOC desired
 Leak tightness required
 Actuator : Pneumatic / electrical
 Max. compressed air available : kg/cm2
 Fail Safe Action
