We bring alive magic of math
Subtracting a number from 100/ 1000/ 10000 etc.
This method is called, “All from 9 and Last from 10”.
Suppose you have to do:
10000
- 6743
The normal method is to subtract from right to left. Since we are
subtracting 3 from 0, we have to borrow 1 from the next number. But
that number is also 0, so we have to borrow from the number to its left
and so on till we reach the left most 1.
This is the normal borrow method of subtraction
0 99 9 1
10000
- 6743
3257
The smart method to do this is to do it from “left to right”.
Starting from the left most digit of the number to subtract, subtract each
digit from 9 and the right most digit from 10
We are subtracting 6743 so we do
9 – 6 = 3 (subtract this digit from 9)
9 – 7 = 2 (subtract this digit from 9)
9 – 4 = 5 (subtract this digit from 9)
10 – 3 = 7 (subtract this digit from 10)
And that is the answer 3 2 5 7

Subtracting a number from 100/ 1000/ 10000 etc.
Another example: What is?
100000
- 48769
Again we do from left to right:
9–4=5
9–8=1
9–7=2
9–6=3
10 – 9 = 1
The answer is 51231
Exercises:
Calculate the following:
10000 1000 100
- 8754 - 547 - 89
100 1000 100
- 37 - 293 - 81
1000 10000 10000
- 889 - 3725 - 8889
100 100 1000
- 56 - 93 - 487

Multiplying Numbers near 100
What is 95 X 93?
Step 1: Subtract each number from 100
95 5 (100 – 95)
93 7 (100 – 93)
Step 2: Subtract the difference of each number from the other number
95 – 7 = 88 93 – 5 = 88 (both the results are the same)
Step 3: Multiply the differences that you get in step 1
5 x 7 = 35
Revision:
96 X 98 = ? 94 X 95 = ?
98 - 2 94 - 6
X 96 - 4 x 95 - 5
= 9408 = 8930

Multiplying Numbers near 200 and 500
If our base is not a multiple of 10, then we have to adjust the part that
we get by subtracting the difference from the base.
Example: Suppose we have to do 196 X 194.
Our base is 200 that is 2 X 100
196 4 (200 – 196)
194 6 (200 – 194)
194 – 4 = 190 (also = 196 – 6).
Since our base is 200, double of 100, we will double this number.
190 X 2 = 380
Now multiply 4 and 6 4 x 6 = 24
So 19 x 194 = 38024
Example 2: 198 X 198 = ?
198 2 (200 – 198)
198 2 (200 – 198)
196 X 2 = 392 2X2=4
198 X 198 = 39204

In every number, each digit has a place value.
Example, look at 236.
6 is in the ones place
3 is in the tens place
2 is in the hundreds place
What this means is that 236 is made up of:
2 hundreds: 100 + 100
3 tens: 10 + 10 + 10
6 ones: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1
If you are given 7263
Then 3 is in the ones place
6 is in the tens place
2 is in the hundreds place and
7 is in the thousands place

We can also do it the reverse way
If we have 4 hundreds, 7 tens and 3 ones, then this is equal to:
100 + 100 + 100 + 100 = 400
10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 70
1 + 1+ 1 = 3

Activity : Squaring numbers near 100, 1000 etc.
1. Subtract the number being squared from 100, say it is = a
2. Add this number to the number being squared.
3. Multiply the result by 100
4. To this add the square of the number you got in step 1
Illustration
Suppose you have to calculate 962.
96 – 100 = -4
Add -4 to 96 =
96 + (-4) = 92
Multiply this number by 100
= 92 X 100 = 9200
Square -4 = 16
Add this to 9200 and that is your answer
9200 + 16 = 9216
Examples:
Calculate 932
93 – 100 = - 7
Add –7 to 93 = 93 + (-7) = 86
Multiply 86 by 100 = 8600
Square –7 = (-7) X (-7) = 49
Add this to the number above and that is your answer
8600 + 49
= 8649
